RIOTS IN MELBOURNE. THE EARLY CLOSING OF SHOPS AND FACTORIES.
The Police Overpowered. Melbourne, April 5. The operation of the Factories and Shop Act is being followed by continually increasing Dightly disturbances in Collingwood and Fitzroy districts. A number of phop assistants and larrikins resenting the keeping open of those shops which, in accordance with the municipal by-laws, are exempted from the provisions of the Act, assembled on Friday and Saturday nights. Getting together a large crowd, they paraded the streets in tne suburbs named, smashing the windows of obnoxious tradesmen, and generally behaving in a riotous manner. The police were greatly outnumbered, and were powerless to prevent outrages. A recurrence of the disturbances is feared to-night, and precautions have accordihgly been taken by the authorities
Melbourne, April 6. A crowd of some ten thousand people assembled at Smith-street, Collingwood, last night, but no eeiious damage was done, a few stores only having their windows broken. The police arrested seven of the most prominent leaders.
