SEARCH STEAMER CHARTERED.

The positive statements by Captain Savory, of the steamer Herald, confirmed by his officers and passengers, that either a ship or a new island had been sighted off Cape Maria Van Diernan, caused, aa we stated on Saturday, a large amount of speculation and no little anxiety, the conviction being that the object was a large ship on her beam ends. Early on Saturday morning, the proprietor of the Star, in order to set all doubts at rest, and, if the worst fears were realised, to render aid to any castaways, resolved to charter the tug Awhina, and to proceed in her to the position indicated. Before ten o'clock on Saturday morning he had concluded an agreement for thecharter of the tug, but, through extraordinary delays in gotting coal and -water, she did not leave tilL afternoon. The delay was most unfortunate, because, Cape Maria Van Dieman being at least 26 hours' steaming distance, the steamer could not reach the scene till late on Sundaj afternoon, rendering it impossible that the search could be prosecuted till daybreak this morning. There were three representatives of this journal aboard. We have received the following despatches to-day : —
