1 This above Mi— to thine^own self be true, And it must follow aß'tffe night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.' — Shakespeare.

■ SATURDAY, NOVEMBER .28, 1885.

We are compelled to hold over till next issue a report of the discussion which took place at the recent meeting of the Pinko County Council re the Hospitnl-and Charitable Aid Boards, but are glad to see that Cr J. B. Smith appeals'' fully itn pressed with the importance of these measures, and the absolute necessity for the Piako County being constituted a soparate district and rated according to its requirements, otherwise according to the Property Tax valuation it would have- to contribute far more than all the other districts con : nected with the Thames Board put together, whilst deriving but little benefit from the Thames Hospital. "We purpose 1 referring to this matter at greater length in an early issue. We hope every resilient in the district will make an effort to attend the entertain-* ing and instructive course of lectures that will be delivered by Professor Black and Mr Montgomery at Waiorongoniai and Te Aroha during the ensuing week. Specially to the miners we would say "spare no effort to' avail to the fullest possible extent of this opportunity." One thing is certain, those who hear the Professor once will need no pressing to go again and again, and we have no doubt the same amount of [enthusiasm will be displayed in connection with the visit of these gentlemen to the Aroha as was the case at Karangiihake, where nightly the f urnaco-r ho«s*e was. literally crammed full, numbsrs availing of the rafters as a point of vantage. A few of the local residents who were amongst the first arrivals at the Aroha, assembled at the Hot Springs Hotel, Te Aroha, on last Thursday evening to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the opening of this goldfield. The usual loyal and patiiotic toasts were proposed and heartily responded to ; also the following :—": — " Success to Te Aroha," " Warden Kenrick," ft Local Industries," " The Miners," coupled with the name of the late Hone Weruhiko, " Minister of Mines," " Minister of Lands," " The Discoverer of Silver at tho Tui Creek," " The Ladies." A number of songs were contributed b^those present, and a very pleasant evening spent. The sharehullcrs in the Silver King claim, Waiorongomai, who some little time since despatched to the Thames Smelting Company 5 tons of ore from this claim, arc so dissatisfied with the price offered by the company for same, that it was decided to bring it back and treat it at Firth and Clarkes battery. It will probably be put through next week. The result will be watched for with much interest At a meeting of the shareholders of the Thames Newspaper and Printing Co; Limited, which was held Monday evening last, it was resolved that the property and business be offered for sale, and that the affairs of the Company be wound up. Messrs Douglas, Hansen, and Wkitehouse were appointed liquidators with fuli powers to act, and it was, resolved that another meeting take, place in about a fortnight to confirm tile proceedings of this meeting. — Thames Star. Mr C. A. Comes, one of the., defeated candidates at the recent election for the Karangahake riding, has lodged a petition ! in the B.M. Court, Paeroa, against the return ef Mr T. . M. Humphreys. Mr Comes has retained Mr Lush while Mr Miller will appear on behalf of Mr Humphries, when the petition will bo heard before Mr Kenrick,* K.M., at Paeroa on Thursday. The commissioner under the Property Tux has wired the Thames Town Clerk that the following are the respective valuations now standing for the districts named. Thames Borough £194,221, Thames and Ohineinuri Counties combined £367,453, Piako County, £1,297,682, Coromandel County £165,478. Tins.information was sought for the guidance of the recently formed Charitable Aid Board. The JIM. Court was opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday and adjourned till 2 p.m., the business was light ; and no cases were entered for htaring 'in the Wardens Court. ( • The usual monthly meeting of the Library Committee was held on Monday j evening last, Hix members present. Ttie business was of a routine character. •• > , On Sunday last one of the refiners in connection with the smelting furnace, accompanied by Mr 'it. X: Davis and some local residents, visited' the claims tak^n up tit the Tui Creek. The visitors appeared to form a very high opinion of the reef, and general appearance ' of tjie country. ' - , • * , - - '-\ . ~ As will be seen by, advertisement a ball will be held* ln the' Public Hall Aroha, on. next Wednesday evening, and'grea't preparations are being made to make ita sue* CQ*5.
