THE MELBOURNE CUP. How the News Was Received in Sydney.
The victory of Sheet Anchor in the Melbourne Cup created the greatest surprise among the sport loving public of Sydney, and when the news was first received placing Grace Darling second, it was discredited. The intersection of Pitt and King-streets was, as usual, the great rallying point for those eager for the latest news, and about four o'clock in the afternoon the crowd was so great ac to almost block pedestrian and vehicular traffic, but thanks to the energy and tact of a strong posse of police, locomotion was not impeded. The news of the victory of Sheet Anchor was received by the crowd with silence, and after discussing the result for a few minutes, the assemblage slowly melted away, leaving only a few seedy hangers on of the turf in possession of the roadway, and thes°, seeing they were conspicuously prominent, soon merged into ordinary passers-by. Very few of the Sydney public have gained by Sheet Anohor's triumph ; Nordenfeldt, Despot, and Trenton being the idols .of speculation ; but in Melbourne and Ballarat he was heartily supported. — "Sydney Herald."
