(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Paeroa, Friday.

LidT'week Itgjnfa ybm\ ■re&3fjf\*^ brief description of the dninis, marked off along the Iwiriliob andL Woodstock iline of reef. This^glek iSpurpose W/lting about the mines «$ are r&e#t«i*ssi the line of reef knoXgi as the '• Crown . The first of these claiais with which I shall deal is the Golden Point, , which ,WAB r at one;fc\me embraced within the area known. as th« Sir Walter Scott .claira r butJoraB^takeiufiiQni^l)B.9ifJM(Eo-o^ that mine for non-compliance with the Mining. ißegulatioiisJ : It ; was' very recently, jsqld in the Warden's jCjourt for the sum of two guineas, and ptircnTsed by Huteman and party, who started prospecting operations about ten days ago, * Sfitce then the proprietors Have succeeded In discovering two well-defined distinct lodes ; and of these tho largest is beiieyed to be the northern, continuation of, and identical with, the' reef which is now being worked npon with such marked success in, the Crown, iriine* This lode averages 4lt in thickness, and ; has been ctt into at various points' fcf a distance of 150 ft .along the line of its outcrop, and has pvored itself \6 be rich in gold and silver at every point of intersection. The other reef, which, is about one foot in width, is located we-t of »nd runs parallel with the itlaxti lod^It is composed partly of ordinary <Jdarfz and partly of a" Mottled ceirtent formation, geld being diffused '-throughout .the whole mass. At t!ie time of my visit to the mine a fair average samjftef of the 1 stuff comprising the !nde was crushed up and panned off, and considering that there was no gold visible to the - nuke 1 eye before crushing, the results were simply astonishing. The Gladys Claim is situate idtfih of and nefct to the Golden Point, and id marked off on the satae line of reef, which has been exposed to view by stripping the surface for a distance of fully 200 ft from the boundary btftweeii the two claims. The lode here maintains an average thickness of 4ft, and then can be no two opinions about its quality. Any person practically acquainted with the character of the reefs which c*ny the precious metals in this district canndt fail to see at a glance that the Iddo in question is rich in gold, and silver— I the latter predominating. A low let el tunnel is now being driven with a view to testing this lode at a depth of 50ft heneath the surface, and the manager expects to have the lode in hand in a very brief space of time. ... • The Waitawheta river forms a natural boundary between the Gladys »nl Welcome, which is the neit claim going south on the same line of reef, of which th* outcrop is' plainly visible 'in various places throughout the whole length of the ground. , The lode is of , immense site, being fully 20ft wide in places, and assay tests broken out therefrom havo yielded splendid results After a considerable amount of surface prospecting had been done on the ground, it was decided to start a tow level tunnel, which is now in a distance of 60ft, and .the manager hopes to have the reef in hand in another SOtt of driving, - This level will afford 70ft of backs 'on.. the reef, and this will be' increased !«o! «o 300 ft', as work is advanced southwards.' < B«nth of an! neAl t« the WVlcwne is the Crown urine, which has been worked for n longer period, and consequently is belter developed than any Ofc'ier mine in this part of the . district. Tiicre is a perfect network of reefs funning through this claim, arid a goo-1 number of them have been fairly tested by means of tunnelling and trenching, and have been proved tw contain goM ami silver in payable qtiuntiticrs. At present operations in this mine are confined to driving tod stoping upon No. 9 )fcd<? y which averages 4ft m width. This lode has now been driven upon 200 ft, «n<i carries more w less gold «nd silver fof the whole 1 of that distance. In the stopes a fair percentage of the stone shows gold freely, and Umrmtakeabler evidence's of its being rich tn silver are not wanting. In fact samples of ore ft out this mine assayed at the Bank of New Zealand in Auckland have yielded as high as 2000 ounces of bnllion to the ton, and the results from the 50 ton parcel, which is to be treated at the Thftme? fain ace should be simply aaton-* ishing.

Satro.— This claim adjoins the Crown on the southern side, nnd i* upon the same line of reef, to : nt rs-ct which' » low level tannel is now' in "'progress* The principal ieeff Upon which work is now being carried cm, bowerer, is situate east nf and parallel with that upon which the Crown Company arer operating* This lede averages from waff to w«H about 2ft Gin in thickness, and sonafr of the 1 sta«e shows gold free)/. It »/»Iso thickly impregnated with silver, and the manager i» to well satisfied with its quality in that respect that be has already broken out, and prepaYed 20 .ton* of ore for transmission to the Thames for treatment on the LaMonfce principle.

A sudden and most nnlooked for turn Of affairs occurred yeeterd«f wifch teg*td to tlit^lection of councillors) which was to' Havfe taken place this day. We are informed that a' large number of fetners* rights (from' 150 to 200 it is Stated) hn?o jUst been taken out at Thames by certain parties deeply interested in the election^ whfch) if made use of o« the polling day in favour of any particubr clique, it is easy to see would' have had a most injurious eflWt.
