The ordinarj monthly meeting of the above body was held at Cambridge on Thursday afternoon. There was a fall attendance of the Council. Legal Opinion. — Messrs Heaketh and Richmond, solicitors gave their opinion as follows .'as to raising loans for existing liabilities : — Have perused and considered your statement of facts hande.l us by Mr Firth, and advise you t'a at no machinery exists fur raising special loan to pay off existing liabili ties. Road to New Battery r-~~Mr J. B. Whyte wrote to the effect that the Minister for Mines had now promised to pay two thirds of the cost of making the road to Fergusons Battery on receipt from the County Council of the reuiaiuing third. He recommended the council to remit the money aa soon as possible, M-- Per^uson had consented to &m<i\ t £500 as the total cost, although ho says tuat it Ltd now cost considerably over that amount. A letter was received from Mr Ferguson to the effect that several slips had occurred of late on this track, Mid asking the council to clear tae same. Mr Pa\itt, C<>:mty I'.ngiueer, also work on the same nutter. Engineer's Repoit on Riling. — Mr Pavitt submitted hi.s Usual niuntuly repo'i. Mo had valued the work done, by Mi Feguson on the loivor track according to instiuctions. Mi b\ i i>,u son's account was for £520 5->, which was correct according to vouchers aud other data at his disposal. Slip* had recently occurred on tne lo.^er tracK, to clear which he estimated it would take £i ! o. The upper pack track was ill a dej lorable condition. Tne main road between Waiorongomai and Shaf f-es-bury had been considerably damaged by recent floods. A small bridge wns waated instead ot the culvert near Mr Hunt's property. Estimated cost £12. The main road through the Aroha township was in a bad state, also road leading into Waiorongomai from the main road. The report was adopted. It was agreed to have the culvert at Hunt's attended to, at the cost named. The other matters were left in ab> a yjure. Aroha-Shaftesbury Road. — Mr W. F. Hunt wrote drawing attention to the necessity of a larger culvert in the roa- i near his property. He threatened legal proceedings. It was agreed to make the necessary impiovemonls, as suggested by the Engineer. Aroha-Katikati Track.— Mr H. J. Simpson wrote to the effect that several slips had occurred on this track, in \kiug it dangerous to cross. It was agreed to write to the Government asking that the unexpended portion of the gnwit be devotod to clearing and repairing the track. The Locomotive.—Cr Gould said he knew a gentleman who he believed would give £150 for the engine now lying at VVaiorongomai. Cr Maclean believed Mr Hunt, manager of the new Miranda coal mine,, , would buy it, m he was . about to construct a tiamway at the mine, and wanted a locomotive. It was decided to write to these gentlemen, also to Messrs Morriu and Co. and Porter and Co. asking the a to make offers for, it. Financial. —It was uuaninio isly ngreed to wire to Wellington to the effect tnat if the £3000 which tiie ftovernmeut intended placing on the Estimates were granted, the Council would thon be prepared to levy a general rate to wipe off tho remainder of thuir debt.

Heary landslips had occurred' which had been cleared away, extra labour having been employed.
