THE SKATING RINK.

A group of merry skaters at the rink went nightly rounds Like the grinding, of a grist mill rose that dry > periistent soWnd; And I nighdy went to walch them from a comfortable place> For the poetry of motion deemed to thrill ench form and face. Some were full-grown men and women; some- wtre youths and maidens fair; Some were children of all sizes, penetrating everywhere ; AH were stirred by sport and frolic as if life were running o'er: *lVaB a pretty night to witness on the hard and burnished floor.

Wednesday, Ist inst., was the opening tiight of the Te Aruha Skating liinu, »nd on the occasion a goodly number aseombled at the Public Hall, which has bsen hired for the season. As was to be expected numbers in their first attempts to adopt this new mole of progression experienced sundry falls, wnich ••ft rded much umascitient to the onlookers, as well us to the tyros themselves) as n«>ne were any the worse fur their tumbles. The meetings ure to he held on VVediWsda^ in ea<sh week) and t>h last Wednesday quite a large number %'SPinfoiei) for the fnn, and spent a t loroHtfhly oiijoyabh* evening from seven t.ll ten. O\\ tliiS occasion the ladies took a more piominont part, and with their accustomed acnteness soon acquired tht knack of this ne.r mode of propul sion, and before the evening was hall over seemed quite at ease as they moveci gracefully around. The floor of thhall had been platted perfectly smooth and well waked over, and aft^r another evening or two's practice, ought be in first-class order. We think the ori ginators of the movement are deserving of thanks from all. The amusement is one nobody can, we think, object to, and will no doubt during the winter months in Te Aroha, be the means of many pleasant gatherings and social intercourse, not only fcr those who skate) but for those who are content to only look on.
