MINING NEWS. (From the "Coromandel Mail. ")

The recent crushing ot 52 tons quartz for the splendid return of 170 ozs. gold will stamp the Matawai as a permanent claim, and very rich in the precious metal, especially when it is home in mind that one man got nearly the whole of this quartz since Christmas, and there is still about 40 tons on hand, estimated to yield 100 ozs. gold ; but the road is in such a state it was impossible to send it to the battery. Moreover the bulk of this gold came from 40 tons. As there was a parcel of 12 tons only put through as a trial, it was thought to be too good to throw over the tip, and was sent clown as a test, and found to average one ounce por ton. With good roads this will pay handsomely, as in any case it would have to be broken out, the only extra expense being for carting and crushing. The mine also is looking first-class, there being a splendid reef showing both on the surface block and the level below. Matawai, No.. 2. — This is the name given to the new ground lately started alongside the Matawai. The owners must be very deficient of the inventive faculty that they cannot coin a name for themselves, but are obliged to copy their neighbour's. However they have made a good start, and evidently mean business, and we shall be very glad to hear that they have struck something valuable before long. The late crushing of the Matawai, and the present appearance of the reef, is almost sure to give a strong impetus to mining in this district, and we are almost .sure to hear of fresh ground taken up and more gold got before long. Mariebel. — The manager of this mine, Mr. Hutchinson, arrived during the week, and i.s making vigorous efforts to get things in order for a good start. We believe with skilful and economical management there is a good future before this mine, for although it did not pay the .shareholders there was a large amount of gold taken out, and yet comparatively the ground has been only scratched on the surface, and now that the triple management has been done away with, all the work can bo done much cheaper under one head. We expect to bee several of the adjoining claims go to work again before long ; it is hardly likely the gold is confined to one claim. Queen of Excsland.— Had first-rate trial crushing of four tons and a half for 9£ ozs. gold. The show just now is even better than that, a remarkably rich prospect being got yesterday. The Manager thinks they are coming on a patch. Royal Oak.— The Manager reports cutting the tribute leader in the new low level, about a foot thick. Splendid stone, highly charged with mineral — just like specimen stone. New Colonial. — Crushed 3-£ tons for 4 ounces gold — not .so good as its neighbour, but still worthy of more trial. The reef is looking well throughout. Union Beach. — The manager is pushing on the work in the Yenws level. Fine reef, and &hoA\'ing little gold. Tokatea. — Work going on very slowly in this mine. Little gold got in &topes. Low level exceedingly hard. Success. — Getting little gold in stopes, but not equal to the mineral indications.
