MINING NEWS.

P>ytit.k\. — Tito following are iho rotuin-. Nt" iinuilnani for the week omliny Satuuhu, the 22nd hnt. :—: —

The rield ol (he trial parcel from the Army Claim was a triile over 7 dwts per ton \r<nn the stampers. Half a ion of Iho 1 nil :n<_;^ have mucc boon tested, and fie result sinus thai if the whole had been treated the gross yield of the quantity cinched would have been hiDU^hi "p 'o something^y^ }, an ounce pi>r ton. Niov Find. — It is satisfactory to li.ive to record that the news trom this, mine i- -till of a \ery cheerily nature, nn. l it may -vilely be asserted Wat at no previous time ha* the general aspect ol the Hoilcin s been more he iltliy tiisin at present. In the Arizona level the reef m tmth en<k looks very well. The face nwitliuauU shows a body of quartz from I to 5 feet in thickness with a fair show of gold from wall to wall. In the south end the lode is nearly a* large, and is yielding crushing stuff of good quality. The distance between the two faces i* now about 80 feet, and for the whole of tlii* length payable stone has been found. In the rise at the end of the cross-cut the reef also looks well. Work in this portion of the mine has been somewhat hindered through deficient ventilation, but a powerful fan is now being put up which will remedy that defect. On the No. 2 reef things continue to wear a satisfactory look. The winze is now down about 13 feet. The contract width is G feet, and the reef is nearly of this size. Gold is freely visible in the stone in the bottom, and I the general appearance of the lode there is exceedingly encouraging. In the north end of the level the reef has improved in appearance, and though still small is much more compact than it has been for some time. It is now bearing sharply off to the western or hangingwall branch, and the two will, it is expected shortly be found to come together again. This hanging wall vein has not been driven on for some time, but it is the manager's intention to push on the face at once and when the junction is reached the reef will, in all probability, be found to make as strong as ever. The stopes on the No. 2, as well as in the upper and surface workings, continue to yield crushing dirt of excellent quality. In the new low level tight country has again been met with. It is not likely there will be any change until the buck reef has been crossed, and it i.s ! still 15 or 20 feet ahead. About 100 I feet has still to be driven to the point I where it is cxrected the reef under the No. 2 winze will be intersected. Wherever practicable the work in the mine is now being done by contract, and there can bo no doubt that this system will prove more economical and in other respects more satisfactory both to miuiI ager and shareholders than the employment of wages men. Lnst week's crushing at the Battery was satisfactory as usual. The yield shows a diminution as compared with the previous week, but that was owing to the smaller number of berdnns used, there being only 5 obtainable (owing to the trial crushings going on) instead of 10 as before Thus a quantity of blanketings, &c, could not be treated, and to this circumstance the apparent falling off is attributable. [Hince the foregoing was written the north end of the Arizona level has continued to improve, and the stuff got out from there is reckoned the best that has been obtained in the mine.]

Colonist. — Work is progressing »s nfUiil nll d vit.li l.lio same sntisTaciory results as heretofore. The ri^o ami winze between the two levels have boon connected, and a Urge extent of the .•eel' is now available for blocking out. Sloping lias nheady \.eon coinmeii"ed and fiom the size nn<l quality of ihe roof in this portion the mine, large quantities of u'ood crushing dirt will be at once obtainable. The block in the north end of the low level is yielding a <>ood supply of payable* <4one, bnt the lode has lately been rather smaller than before. It is now, however, increasing in size and will get larger a^ the crosscut is neared. Since the holing through of the winze and rise, work has been resumed in the south end of the low level. The reef is there of the average size, and shows a fair sprinkling of gold. A new and lower level is now in contemplation and will probably be commenced in a week or two. It is expected the reef will be intersected at about 90 feet from the starting point. As will be seen from the baUcry returns of last week the yield is keeping up to the former average. Canaim vx. — The reef has now been followed 15 feet from the Colonist boundary into the Company's giouiul, and though considerably smaller in size than in the adjoining claim, has shown gold, more or less, all along. The country is at present rather disturbed, owing, it is supposed, to the proximity of the Heio reef. As soon as the i broken ground is passed through there is every likelihood that the reef will again assume its average thickness. Diamond Gully. — The reef, which has been expected for sonic time, is now in hand. It, is at present rather broken and does not show any gold, but from the appearance of things in the adjoining claims there can be little doubt that it will improve as driven on. Eureka. — Since driving was commenced in the low level in conjunction with the Victoria Company the face has been carried in about 15 feet. The reef is at present larger than usual, measuring about 7 feet in thickness, and a portion of it is being left on the footwall. The quartz shows a little i^old, some of which is of coarse quality. lv the intermediate le\ul the vein is liks than the average size, but is producing good crushing stuil". Coqukttk. — The drive in which the recent discovery of gold beaiing stone was made being considered too nunr the surface to be of much advantage in the working of the mine, the extension of it lias been discontinued, and a winze has been stalled to pnive whether the gold _;oe& downward. As soon a^ t.'iis point 'is satisfactorily sc ..iled a low level will be conpiuMcod which will open up. the reef at a dep'h that will a fair height of backs to operate on. [\ l<: ] U)p — The ero--, cutting of the reef at the bottom of the n\e is still L-oiiii; on, and an occasional colour is visible in the stone broken out. Ten iers have been called for putting in a low level, which will be bt.ute<i as ->o<m a^ the trnstlinc: across the County tramway is completed. Pikknix. — The cross lode which was expected to be cut any time during the past week lias now been reached. There has not been time yet to do any work upon it to prove its value, but some good stone was got in the drive close to the junction two «'ays ago, and as the cross vein, from what has been seen of it, seems to bear quartz of similar character, the probability i* that payable stuil will there al*o be met with shortly. Inverness. — Another drive is boinn put in on the reef from which good stone was obtained in tli2 upper part of the claim. The extension of the low level has for the present been discontinued, and a rise started ou the rein that was driven on sometime ago. As soon as communication is effected with the upper levels operations will be commenced on the block over the drive from which the excellent trial crushing was taken sometime since. The difficulties in the way of getting the quartz from this block to the hopper near the County tramway has proved an insurmountable obstacle to the working of it hitherto. The rise just started will overcome this difficulty. Alphabet Company. — No official announcement has yet been made of the return from the trial crushing of two tons from the small reef in the F section of this Company's ground, but it is understood to be about 11 ounces of gold, or something over 5 ounces per ton.
