THE GOVERNMENT IMPEACHED. Wellington, June 22, 9 p.m. Although no serious (linger is apprehended, it is nevertheless true that the Government has already got itself into the throes of a no-confidence motion. On the House meeting to-day nn agreement was come to that business should be suspended for the purpose of giving Montgomery an opportunity for moving a motion impeaching the Government, and strongly censuring the Treasurer. Mr Montgomery made a speech of half-an-hour's duration. Major Atkinson followed as a matter of course and being then in a towering passion liis remarks lost a very great deal of their effect. There is no great interest in the result, as it generally is surmised that the Government is tolerably sure of the situation. On the second reading of the Law Practitioners Act which was allowed to pass the Lower House last night without division, Sir George Grey in reply made a really splendid speech. The bill, which aims at doing away \uth what is known as the general knowledge qualification provided for in the Act of last session, was stoutly opposed by tue Go- % eminent, nevertheless so very telling and effective was Grey's speech in support of the bill that the Government had not the courage to call for a divibiou. Of course it will be thrown out in the Upper House, still that does not detract from the fact that Sir G. Grey on this occumou can claim agteat victory.
