NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. Press Association. DUNFDIN, December 28. The New Zealand Chess Congress was officially opened to-day, the speakers being Mr R. A. Clclaml (president), the Muyor of Duncdin, and the Chief Justice Sir Robert Stout. On behalf of the competitors, Messrs W. A. Mason and Kelling spoke. Congratulatory telegrams were read from the Wellington, Working Men's Chess Club, Mr Gricrson (of Auckland), the Wellington Chess Club, and the Chrlstchurch Chess Club. There are eight competitors for the championship. Play commenced at 2 p.m. Mason v. Fouhy—Centre Counter Gambit. On the tenth move Mason announced mate in two. Gyles v. Kelling—Centre Counter Gambit. Kelling resigned at the 33rd move. Dunlop v. Sevcrnc—Queen's Gambit declined. At the 19th move Dunlop lost a piece by an error. By a brilliant piece of play Dunlop later succeeded in mating Severnc on the 34th move. This game may take the prize for the best save. Davfes v. Coombs—Phllidor Defence. A very even game until about the 28th move. Coombs resigned on the 34th move.
