PERSONALS.

Lieut-Colonel H. M. Griffen, Director of Financial Services, -was a passenger by the Wahine this morning.

After giving eight lectures -within two weeks, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, accompanied by Mr Carlyle Smythe and Miss Freda Sternberg, left for Melbourne by the Paloona on Friday. Before leaving for London Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will visit Tasmania and Queensland. Mr W- H. Jackson, who died after a brief illness, at Nelson, a few days ago, was a son of Lieut.-Colonel Jackson, of the Indian Army. He was born in Kent, and was educated in England. The late Mr Jackson was subsequently a police magistrate at Colombo, chairman of the Colombo Harbour Board, Principal Collector of Customs, and also a member of the Legislative Council. The undermentioned officers of the New Zealand Staff Corps have been posted to the Retired List, with permission to retain their rank and wear the prescribed uniform (dated January Ist, 1921): Major-General Sir Alfred William Bobin, K.C.M.G., C.B. (d.); Major Henry Charles Nutsford, M.8.E.; Major John Murray Boss, M.C., with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, in recognition of distinguished service in the late War (dated December Ist, 1920). Mr Charles Francis, one of the bestknown of American printers, is making a world tour to inquire into labour conditions, he having been appointed a special representative of the United States Department of Labour for the purpose. He left New York at the beginning of August, and his itinerary includes New Zealand and Australia, in which latter country he commenced his career as a printer. Mr Francis is to deliver several lectures on matters of interest and importance in the industry, and carries with him moving picture equipment with which to illustrate his talks.
