The plough track, which had been watered overnight, was in fine order for galloping on, all the work being done on it. Albert Cutts was the first out, sending Miss Mimic and Whining Hit half a mile, which they left behind in good style in 60sec. .. Vespucci, assisted by Rossini over the first five furlongs, ran a mile nicely in lmin 45sec. The former has improved since the Cup meeting, and Is getting through his ■work in fine style. One of the best gallops put up at Riccarton for many a day was registered by Arrow-smith, who, with Bert Ellis in the saddle, jumped off at the winning post and ran the first three furlongs in 3a 2-ssec, four furlongs in 48sec, five furlongs in lmin, six furlongs in lmin 12 2-asec, seven furlongs in lmin 25sec, and the mile, easing up, in lmin 39 2-ssec. Mandrake and The Reaver were companions over five furlongs which the former left behind nicely in lmin 3 2-ssec with The Reaver some lengths away. Wartone was to have gone five furlongs tut had to be eased up when half the distance was covered through the lightweight boy not knowing the rules of the track. Algidus galloped six furlongs nicely. After breakfast the track was a little faster, but most of the work was done over short courses. Fahrlnade, Moorabbe, Pyjama, Sunny Loch, Lady Pallas, Castellan, Micky Free, Fablsco, Braid and Purple Spur, all got through useful work. __ Glentanner, with T. Musscn up, jumped two hurdles well. . , R. J. Mason expects to leave for Auckland about December 15. The North Canterbury sportsman, Mr Gordon Fulton, has secured a property on the Yaldhurst Road, where he intends setting up a training establishment. In a few weeks' time, S. Trilford will arrive from Orarl and take charge of Mr Fulton's team. A cable message from London states that £SOOO will be added to the stake for th« next Grand National, making it worth about £7OOO, which exceeds the value of the Derby. The grass track at New Brighton will be open for fast work on Thursday and Saturday morning. _ _ The South Canterbury Trotting Club, which had decided on March 10 for its next meeting, has been compelled to postpone the fixture to April 7. In the list of handicaps for the Westport Trotting Club's meeting, published yesterday, Dimlight, 7sec, was omitted from the Te Kuha Handicap, and Dimlight, 14sec, from the President's Handicap. Nearly all the Canterbury horses which raced at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting returned home yesterday. Most of the trainers speak highly of the treatment accorded them by the Forbury stewards, but decry the increased expense of railway travelling and accommodation.

The Greymouth Trotting Club receives entries for its summer meeting up till 9 p.m. to-day. Horses owned by Southland sportsmen finished second in eight events at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting. The recently-formed Otautau Trotting Club has applied for a totalisator permit for next season, and intends holding a nontotalisator meeting this season,, probably In the autumn.. Excellent support has been accorded the Gore Trotting Club for its annual meeting, the lists being decidedly above the average, both in point of size and quality. Amongst the best known of the entrants are Barooga, Blue Chimes, Gladiola, Indra, Matty's Boy, Marmion, Thixcndale, Guardess and Newcourt. On the second day of the Forbury Park meeting, says a writer in the "Otago Daily Times,'.' F. Holmes, jun., was fined £5 for speaking to some persons after going out on the track in the Advance Handicap. It was noticed on the first day that two of the stewards, who are also owners, went out and had a final chat with their horsemen, alter a preliminary jog. The rules should apply with equal force t« all. The Canterbury owners, Mrs F. C. Ailington and Mr G. Steele, headed the prize-list at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting with £420 apiece. Others well in the money were Messrs W. H. Young £385, B. Jardcn. £2BO, W. G. McLcod £240, A. Kennedy £175, Nelson Price £175, T. Ritchie 1143, and B. Grice £l4O. The Ashburton Trotting Club should be well satisfied with the list of entries for its summer meeting. Every race has filled remarkably well, and the class of competitors is above the average. The Ashburton Cup has drawn 24 entrants, including such high-class performers as Agathos, Emperor, Sungod, All Bell, Rorke's Drift, Gleaming, Whispering Willie, Sherwood, Maoriland, Sympathy and Capriccio. Altogether it looks as if the club is in for a record gathering. TEMPLAR.
