LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Probate was granted by Mr Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court this morning in the estates of Jas. Pipe (Mr J. H. TJpham) and John Benson (Mr A. J. Malley). Letters of administration were granted in the estate of Caroline Mary Williams (Mr T. H. Williams).
On the Duvauchelles-Pigeon Bay Road yesterday, a three-seater Studebaker motor-car, the property of the Lands Department, went over a 30-feet bank at a bend. The car was not greatly damaged and only one of the two passengers was at all hurt. Mr J. Kelly, of the Valuation Department, was not injured, but Mr B. N. Scott, Crown Lands Banger, had to be attended by Dr Cantrell, of Akaroa, for injuries to a wrist and his ribs.
When Mr S. K. Bassett, of Richmond Hill, Sumner, arrived home from his work in the city on Tuesday evening, he found his wife lying dead in jthe washhouse, with a pillow Tinder her head. Gas was escaping from a tube laid near the deceased's face. Mrs Bassett, who was 44 years old, had apparently lain down after turning the gas on. A doctor, who was summoned immediately on her husband's arrival, stated that she had been dead for some hours. Before Mr S. E. McCarthy, District Coroner, an inquest was held yesterday afternoon, when a verdict was returned that death was due to gas poisoning, self-administered, while deceased was in a state of despondency.
