The Christehurch Fire. Brigade was summoned at 10.50 p.m. yesterday to the yard of Redpath's building in Cashel Street, where a tin of rubbish was found to be on lire. No damage was caused.
A sitting of the Conciliation Council will be held in Christehurch on Friday, when the dispute of the Canterbury motor mechanics will be considered. Mr W. H. Hagger, Conciliation Commissioner, will leave for Dunedin and Invereargill on Saturday. At the meeting of the AVoolston Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr (.'. Hill) mentioned that the new sanitary arrangements had been instituted and were working satisfactorily. In letters to the Press a critic of the council had made some entirely .unwarranted statements in regard to sanitary matters at the AVoolston school, and, in fairness to the council, he challenged the statements. Since the previous sanitary contractor had thrown up the work the Borough Council had made special arrangements in regard to the school. The Works and Traffic, Committee of the Christehurch Tramway Board reported to the board, yesterday afternoon, that the growth in traffic to trotting grounds and racecourses is such that further track facilities must be provided if risks of serious accidents are to be avoided. The committee is making arrangements accordingly with the authorities concerned. Consideration is also being given to improving the track facilities with respect to Show Ground traffic, for the same reason. Discussion of the matter by the board was deferred until further information is given by the committee.
The ever-rising cost of living is a matter of concern to at least one of the members of the Woolston Borough Council. At the meeting of the council last evening, Cr G. T. Owen drew attention I to the fact that the Government Statistician had placed the value of the sovereign at 8/2 as compared with pre|War standards. The position was bejcoming acute, and there was'no sign of its easing. He suggested the calling of a public meeting for some Saturday night, an invitation to be extended to Mr J. McCombs, M.P.. to address the meeting, with a view to making urgent representations to the Government. The matter was deferred until the next meeting of the council. A scheme for better heating and water facilities on the Sumner beach was advocated at last evening's meeting of the Sumner Borough Council by Cr W. G. Black, who expressed the opinion that machines should be placed on the beach Upon which people could, by placing a coin in the slot, boil their own water. The Mayor (Hon. J. Ban) thought the scheme impracticable. It was all right in theory, but people could not be trusted to give the machines fair treatment. The best plan would be for some private concern to take the matter up. A special subcommittee, consisting of Crs Black, T. E. AVhitfield, and C. M. Roswell, was set up to deal with this and other matters affecting the public. The committee was recommended to formulate a scheme for financing any proposal it might bring down. The fact that the permanent way of the Christchurch tramways has reached a critical stage in its life was brought to the attention of the Christchurch Tramway Board yesterday afternoon by its Works and Traffic Committee. "Most, of it has been laid for 12 or 15 years," reported the committee, "and, in the nature of things, repairs and renewals are necessary. To facilitate this, an order was placed for an additional road roller to be delivered last February. Owing to strikes in the Old Country, the agents were unable to deliver in February, and time extensions were granted, but as there appears to be no prospect of getting delivery, the committee has been compelled to cancel the contract and to place an order for two petroldriven rollers made in Australia, of which prompt delivery is promised.'' Consideration of this report was held over until the committee has considered the matter further.
