SOUTH WESTLAND BRIDGES. from Our Own Corre*pon<trnt. GREYMOUTH, September 3. Amongst the matters which were recognised by the recent visitors from tl/i Canterbury Progress League as of para- \ mount importance was the bridging f f *«* . tho StyM Westland rivers. Several of these works appear likely to receive early , attention. Orders have been received to , let a contract for the Waitangi bridge as soon as timber can be procured. The site of the Waiho bridge lias been surveyed, ami an appropriation is awaited. It "will be a suspension bridge. A tender 'vis • been accepted for a bridge over the i Totara River in the same vicinity. Teni ders are to be called immediately by the, Public Works Department fnr bridging the Little Waitaha River. The sum of ' £ISOO has been authorised for small ; bridges and culverts over all streams on tho Christehureh Road, as far as Otira. Culverts on the road from Mikonui to Ferguson's are to be completed by Ohrist--1 mas, in addition to the bridges. "Repairs " are to be effected without delay on the ' Mt. Hercules Road, where wash-outs have j occurred. For the Bruce Bay binding* . road a first grant, of £tiso has been ex- , pended, and a further amount of £250 authorised. In reference to the Arahnra- ', Awatuna Road to Kumava Junction, it [ has been decided to spend £SOO at the Arahnra end, on the. sea side of the railI way, and a similar amount between A..re , Creek and Kipitca—the two*sections to ', lie ultimately linked up. Repairs are be- ' ing made to the Te Anan-Milford track ii) anticipation of the summer tourist traffic, and Mrs Sutherland has consented to open the accommodation house at the sound. WALLSEXD SUSPENSION BIfTPGF. } The Brunner Borough Council, tired of waiting for any further development, respecting the re-erection of the Wallsend bridge, which collapsed seven months ago, decided, at its last meeting, to send a deputation on the matter to Wellington, j NOTES. I The management of the Progress and Energetic gold mines has decided to close down these mines, retaining onlv sufficient hands to keep the workings in order, on account of the scarcity of miners and the high cost of mining material. The Buller Valley Dairying Company"» Wostport property has been purchased by the Buller Farmers' Cooperative Dairy Company, the price being £5750. Owing to continued erosion of the banks of the Watnvoa River on the main somti road, tho Public AVorks Department proposes to effect an important deviation in the road so as to cross the river further inland. The alteration will involve tho bridging of four small, but turbulent, streams. Until the exact route is deflntd these works will be held over. A public meeting held last week -it Wataroa decided to form a local racing club. A committee was appointed to select a suitable course, and a permit \vi,l at once be applied for from the Minister.
