HATCH CUP MATCH.

The first match for the Hatch Cup, open for competition by tennis representing intcrprovincial primary schools, was played on Saturday at Lam-aster Park, between teams representing Otago and Canterbury. The standard of play shown by the. boys was surprisingly good, especially so with regards to the Individual play. The confident manner in which Ihey took the ball on the stick and the use and accuracy of the back-hand play were good to watch. As with senior players, however, tile use of liic back-hand stroke was responsible for a number of penalties for obstruction. The general knowledge of the game shown was not particularly good, this being more especially so wilh the Canterbury eleven. The Otago players kept their positions much better and made more use of their wing players, and it is due to these points thai they won the game. The Canterbury boys were individually equal to their opponents hi play, bill it was the lack of knowledge of the game and its finer points.that brought about their defeat. The members of the Canterbury half-line did not keep their positions well, the outside halves especially paying too little attention lo the opposing wingers.

Canterbury, by means of several free bits, was the first to attack, but sound defence by the visiting lull-backs drove the attackers back, and Otago took a hand at attacking. Offside play, however, spoilt the chance, and afforded Canterbury relief, and a period of midfleld play followed. From a roll-in, Canterbury obtained possession and attacked strongly, and from a scramble Hogws scored for Canterbury. Otago next took a hand at attacking, and for a spell kept the home team busy defending. Canterbury eventually broke away, but when it was looking dangerous, burns (Otago) saved cleverly and drove the ball up-field. Hush, obtaining possession, took the ball into the circle, and, beating the goalkeeper, scored for Otago. Canterbury retaliated with a strong attack, and Rogers, obtaining possession in the Otago circle, scored from a difficult angle. Otago woke up under this reverse, and rushed play to the Canterbury circle, Hush scoring his second goal for Otago. Almost immediately after the same player took the ball down the field and into the Canterbury circle, his shot at goal glancing off the goalkeeper's pads into Ihc net. Otago kept up the pressure, but sound defence drove it back and enabled Canterbury to attack until offside play spoilt the chance. ' Hall-time sounded shortly afterwards, with the scores 3 to 2 in Otago's favour.

On resuming, Canterbury attacked, and for a time had Otago busy defending, a free hit eventually Riving relief. Otago tools a turn nt attacking, hut the home team's defence held good, and play returned to midfleld. Otago was soon hack at it again, however, and from, a nice centre liy Watt, Rapson scored Otago's fourth goal. The visitors kept up the pressure, and only good defensive play kept them out. Canterbury eventually cleared its circle and set its forwards on an attack, from which I'.dginton scored. The home team kept up the pressure, but failed to drive home the attack, and eventually play returned to midfleld. Shortly before time was called Otago attacked, but offside play spoilt the chance, time being called without further score. Messrs 11. Hatch and 11. Mogridge were the referees.
