TURF TOPICS.

The eagerlv-anticipated handicaps for the New' Zealand Trotting Cup made their appearaine this morning, ami they appear to lie of on equitable nature. Though the race is for horses that have gone 4min :'.3sec or better, it is evident that Mr Brinkman has made it a -i. : '<- elass. .thereby reducing the limit to Psec. In this he has acted wisely, and enhanced the prospects of the backmarkers. Author Dillon, who won the National Cup last month, from a 4.24 mark, is now a second further back. From the manner in which he defeated Trix Pointer, Sherwood, General Link, Albert Cling, and Moneymaker in the August ra.e. they will all have to improve to have much chance with him. Even so. in what promises to be a bigfield, the scratch horse will have to better anv of bis previous efforts to win. In being placed on a 4.27 mark. Matchlight appears to be particularly well treated. Last season, when handicapped at 4.20, he defeated all but Trix Pointer and Moneymaker, whom he is now set to meet ou "sec and 2sec better terms respectively. Unfortunately, the Four Chimes horse has been more or less unsound in the interim, and it is by no means certain that he will see the post. Produced in his best form, lie would have a chance second to none. Cello Sydney Wilkes ha> paid the full penalty for his three wins' at Addington last November in being placed on a ''.27 mark. In the Park Handicap, at Canterbury Park, last January, Trix Pointer ran him to a neck off the same mark, and on that form she appears to have something the better of the argument. Little notice need be taken of the American mare's showings last moath, as she was far from her best. "With another eight weeks' preparation, Holmes can be depended »n to have her

well tuned up by the time Cup day] comes round. Agathos and General Link are both on the Cise.- mark. Neither ! raced up to form ar the August meeting,! but it would hardly do to set too much store on their latest form. Sim-e then. I General Link has been rased up, but he should be in goo.l trim for the big; event. John Dillon, Willie Lincoln, audi Oinako are all more or less unsound, I and it is problematical whether any of them will survive the necessary prepara- i tion. Sherwood is such a solid customer! that he cannot be lightly passed over,! but. on National Cup form. Author! Dillon should again have Ids measure.' There are derided possibilities associ-1 ated with Lean Dillon, who can be ex-j pected to ,-how-ns much improvement as | anything in the race. Notwithstanding I his" defeats at Addington last month. \ Albert Cling bids fair to be in the monev. He is particularly well treated: in being placed on the Ssec mark,! though, at the same time, he. like Trix j Pointer, General Link, and Money- ! maker, is meeting Author Dillon only on > a se.-o'nd better terms than when the; latter beat them so decisively in the j National Cup. Moneymaker and Erin's! Queen both hail from J. Bryce's stable,! nnd a repetition of his form of last , Noveii- 1 ft- should leave the former with j more i ..an average prospects, lie is a] smart beginner, but does not finish too veil at the business end of a two-miles ! contest. Miutson, Steel Bell and Reta Peter, all on the 9sec mark, cannot have

much chance in a race of this description, and all of (hem should be held safe by Hal Junior. Tho latter showed so much improvement in his essays last season as to suggest his clipping several seconds off his best time, and, under A. Hendrieksen's tuition, he will lack nothfug in the matter of training or horsemanship. During the next few weeks jthere are sure to be many changes in the position, but at present it looks as if Hal Junior, Trix Pointer, and the. Oakhampton elect are likely to play I their parts well. I A number of local trotting enthusiasts (met on Saturday evening for the purjpose of making a presentation to Mr E. C. McPermolt on the eve of his marriage. Mr R. .(. Monro referred to the ability of the guest, both as a rider ar driver, and also to his many good qualities mi and off the tracks. He handed Mr MiTVrmott two silver entree dishes and an oak tray, with the best wishes of all light harness enthusiasts. Mr McPermott briefly expressed his thanks | for the gift and the'good feeling that jhad prompted it. j The. Gore Trotting Club has £7OO on loan to the Gore Racing Club, ami (-ash jin the bank amounting to £302 5/-!. | Winter Wind claims engagements in (both the Wanganui and Dunedin Guineas. The latter will probably be 'his mission next month.

Owners are given a final reminder that entries for the Ashhurton Racing Club's Spring Meeting close this evening. All Over went amiss on the eve of the Mart on meeting, and could not fulfil his engagements.

The only meeting to engage the attention of sportsmen this week will be that of the Manawatu Hunt Club on Wednes-

Mr W. Higgins has bestowed the fol lowing names on his two-year-olds:—

Gelding by Absurd—Lady Eta, Moonstruck-; filiv bv Martian —Secret Link, Password;'filly by Martian—Torquay, Martial Dawn.'

j The Geraldine Racing Club fakes en- ! tries for its spring meeting up till Satur- ; day next. j though he has not yet won a race, IMr W. R. Kemball's New Zealand Cup ': candidate, Tenterfiebl, has been placed jon numerous occasions in important it-aces. Last autumn he ran second to j Macadam in the Australian Cup, two ! miles and a quarter, and he onl}' finished la neck away from the winner, who ran 'the distance in 3miu 57jsee. Tenteriield |is by Sea Prince, who is a son of the English Derby winner. Persimmon.

I Out of a large number of applicants IMr G. Baildon has been appointed .judge Ito the Avoudale Jockey Club for the | present season. j If the Owners', Breeders' and Train;ers' Association in England succeeds in | getting the support of the Jockey Club, "racing in that country, instead of being only the sport of the rich, will be almost las cheap in most instances as it is in i Australia. One of the recommendations •made is to the effect that the maximum .liability to owners to run in races shall I not be more than 1 per cent, of the ■ added money, or prize guaranteed, exicept in classic races and such events as 1 shall be specially named. j America 's most successful jockey of 'this season, J. Carmody, intends riding jiu England. He is not yet 17, his weight lis only 7.2, and, according to his | admirers he is another Tod Sloan. If the latter part is correct, there is plenty | of room for him in England, where, according to what we read, the present : standard of jockevshiy is far from high, TEMPLAR.
