Mr and Mrs W\ A. Fleming and Mr and Mrs T. 1). Featherstoue (Kaikoura) are staying ai the Clarendon.
Mrs Percy Brown and Miss Joyce Brown have gone back to Wellington after a vi*it to friends in this city. Miss J. Wallace, of Heatheoto, and Miss E. M. Green, of Sydenham, were, on the occasion of their respective-mar-riages, each presented with an afternoon tea service by the employees and staff of the clothing factory of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
A verv enjovnlde little dance was held last week' in S. Michael's Hal), Durham Street, promoted by Miss Xapper and Mr Vincent Clarke. The* liall was very prettily decorated with coloured bunting, Chinese lanterns and evergreens. Mr R. B. Hean acted as M.C., and Mrs Price was pianiste. The supper arrangements were ably carried out by Mrs Blackmore, Miss Paton, and Mrs Sanderson.
The interest aroused by the spectacle of a one-armed lennis player at Wimbledon recalls the, great feats of a lady playe- similarly handicapped (says the London "Daily Chronicle"). Miss Hilda Ditchings, who was born with only a left arm, succeeded in winning many championships, notably those at Palmerston, Xew Zealand, in the singles and ladies' doubles. Miss Ditchings, who is at, pre"sent living in Loudon, still plays a fine game, and is quite likely to be seen in s-ome of the tournaments this summer. Those who have seen Miss Ditchings play say it is remarkable to see one so severely handicapped by physical infirmity display such ability at lawn tenuis. She servos "in a wonderfully clever manner by holding her racket with three lingers of her only liand. and a slight toss of the ball, which is held .by the remaining linger and thumb, followed by a quick, twisty tap with the racket, results in a fast low ser. ice which is anything but easy to take.
