Guthrie) wrote that he had obtained a j departmental report on the board's request I for a subsidy on rates, and that he was ' I unable to grant the subsidy. Many heavy demands wore bring made on the financial ; resources of the Dominion at present, and lie suggested that the board should have • the law amended to provide for greater subsidies from contributing local bodies. League regarding the establishment of a School of Forestry in Canterbury. Mr Young said that deciduous trees were required in New Zealand, and as they thrived better in a colder climate than in a warmer, Canterbury was a suitable place for such a school. The curator's report slated that he had received a valuable palm from Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, a collection of seeds from Gizeh, Egypt, and a collection of veronicas from Mr Hart, of Lawrence. A number of varieties of flowering shrubs had been planted in the new bog garden. It was reported that the receipts at August 31, 1320, were £790 6/10, the expenditure, including the balance al Hie bank on July ■M, of Sis4f» 9/1, was £1921 0/2, leaving a debit balance in the bank of £1124 4/4. The rate levy outstanding for 1920-21 was £2OU fl/2, and in Xo. 2 account there was a credit balance,of i'2B.'i 3/-.
