BUSINESS ON 'CHANGE.

GOVERNMENT STOCKS WEAKER. There were no quotations on 'Change to-day by buyers of Government debentures, although there are numerous sellers. A better tone rules for banks. The cabled announcement that the directors of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., propose to alter the articles of association is interpreted to mean that there is a likelihood of a capitalisation of reserves or other extension of capital. In consequence, shares have firmed. Sales -are reported at £l3 10/and £l3 12/-, and buyers quote £l3 10/and sellers £l3 13/-. Shares are now ex dividend, 8/- v There is a close; market for Australasias at £9l 10/- and £92 10/-, quotations •by buyers and' sellers respectively. Few buyers of insurance shares have been on the market of late, but to-day there is an inquiry for both Standards and South British. A buyer offered £ll 10/- for Dalgetys, but this quotation is on the low side. Huddart-Parkers firmed a few days ago from 55/6 to 56/6. Buyers now offer 55/6, and sellers ask for 57/-, sp that rates appear to have steadied. A sale is reported of Union Steamships preferential issue at 20/3. This price seems low. After having been quoted regularly for several months, there are no buying or selling quotations for New Zealand Eefrigeratings. On other exchanges, however, 'there are still operators. For the Kaiapoi Woollens 5/paid issue, buyers are offering 13/6. As the balanee-sheet of this concern will be issued shortly, the inquiry is likely to be stimulated. The announcement by the Christehureh Gas Co.-, Ltd., of a rise in the price of gas has hardened shares of this concern. As a rule, higher prices mekn a lesser consumption, but, despite increases in its rates which this concern has passed on during the past year or so, the consumption has been growing. Buyers quote £6 10/- and sellers £6 15/-, ex dividend. Burns, Philp have hardened. Buyers offer 38/6 without response, and therefore may have to increase their quotations. Mason, Struthers are firm, buyers offering 19/-. Quotations in Auckland to-day for Waihis show a weaker tone. Buyers offer 35/3 and sellers quote 36/9. There is a seller in Christchurch at the same figure. Talismans, in Auckland, are quoted at 7/9 by buyers and 8/3 by sellers, and Grand Junctions 10/6 by buyers and 10/9 by sellers. Shares of both these concerns are somewhat .firmer.
