FIRES.

OUTBREAK IN RESTAURANT. The City Fire Brigade received a call at 10-10 "o'clock last evening to Cashel Street, where a fire had broken out in the King George Cafe, conducted, by Messrs Hugh and J. J. O'Connor. Tbtee engines were promptly on the scene, and, with two leads of ■ water, subdued the blaze within half an hour. Cooking appliances and crockery in the rear portion of the restaurant suffered considerably, but other furniture, with the exception of wooden fittings, escaped very much damage. A fruit shop nest door, owned by a Chinese, was slightly damaged by water, which also partially flooded the fish shop below, tenanted by Messrs Dennis Bros. Messrs O'Connor hold a sub-lease of the King George Cafe from Dennis Bros. The fire originated from a gas-ring.in the kitcheqg on the ground floor, at the rear of the fish shop, and spread up the lift to the first floor. Tn*e stock-in-trade, plant, and fittings of the King George Cafe were insured with the Boyal Exchange Assurance Co., for £450; those of Messrs Dennis Bros., with the same company for £595; and those of the Chinese fruiterer, with the Phcenix Assurance Co., Ltd., for £2OO. Particulars regarding the insurances on the building are not yet available. OUTBREAK IIFwASHHOUSB. A fire broke out at 12.40 o'clock to-day in a washhouse in the rear of premises at 470 Madras Street, owned * and occupied by Mr L. J. Lewis. The fire was caused through, a defective chimney. Very little damage was done.
