HOCKEY.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Hockey Association was held last evening, Mr W. Simpson presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report congratulated the clubs on the return of the soldier-players to the game. The number of teams that had entered for the various competitions was 25, the same number as the previous season. The senior competition, which had been won by Sydenham A, and Selwyn Clubs -(bracketed together), with seven points each, had been welt contested. A pleasing feature of the entries was the revival of the Addingand Y.M.C.A. Clubs. The junior comi petition was won by Technical College with 7* points, and the third grade competition by Selwyn with 8* points. The committee had been successful in initiating a primary schools' competition, but owing to the apathy displayed by many of the masters, only live schools had entered. For the purpose of assisting the schools, the committee had decided to supply hockey sticks at 3/C each, of which amount 2/6 was to be refunded if any stick was returned in reasonably good order. Sydenham had won the schools' competition with 7 points, Linwood being second with 6 points. For the first season since the declaration of JN&r, intcrprovincial matches had been" played. Canterbury had played Manawalu at Palmerston North and had won the shield by two goals to oue. Subsequently Canterbury had defeated Hawkc's Bay by two goals to one, Otago by seven to nil, and had drawn with Nelson, each side scoring three goals. The fifth and final shield match bad been played against Auckland, who defeated Canterbury by one goal to nil. A match had been played against the men of H.M.S. New Zealand. Home and home junior representative games had been played against Wellington. The annual "Isix-a-side tournament had been held in conjunction with the Indies' Association. The Hockey Referees' Association had again provided referees for the competition matches, and the thanks of all players were due to that body for the , impartial and courteous manner in which the members had carried out their duties. The financial statement showed an excess of expenditure over income amounting to | £34 4/2. The accumulated fund now stood at £ll2 5/6, made up as follows:—General fund, £ll 7/-; grounds fund, £IOO 17/8. I Discussing the report, the chairman said I that the most important event during the j past year had been the initiation of the ; primary schools' competition. Members would be pleased that the Lancaster Park ground would again be available this season. (Applause.) He urged that the older players should continue their interest in the game in order to help it along. Owing to the fact that some of the clubs had not paid up their subscriptions, the financial position was not too good. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year:—President, Mr W. Simpson; vice-presidents, Messrs S. G. Holland, F. Crawford, C. Bellamy and W. Chappcll;

treasurer, Mr I>. G. Blackwell; executive* Messrs W. J.. Franklin, H. Throp, E. N. Smith, W. E. Cook, J. B. Le Mottee,' S. Morris, H. Keys and R. Joe; hon. auditor, Mr E. R. In the six-a-sidc tournament the club annexed the junior competition, both senior and third grade teams being in the final in their respective grades.
