NO APPEARANCE OF ACCUSED. A charge of bigamy was preferred at the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr V. G. Day, S.M., against Arthur John Patienee, of Hastings, labourer. It was stated in the charge that the accused had married Harriet Jane Southen at the office of the Registrar of Marriages at Christchurch, on September 26, 1917, and being thus married, went through a form of marriage, on January 3, 1919, with May Rodgers, at the Chalmers Church manse, Timaru, thereby committing bigamy. Chief-Detective Mcllveney stated that the accused had been apprehended by the police at Hastings, and there remanded to appear at Christchurch. He had been admitted to bail. Mr Day: Well, the recognisance is here! Chief-Detective Mcllveney: Yes—but the man is not I Mr Day: Well, the case can stand down. The case was called later in the morning, when there was still no appearance of the accused. Chief-Detective Mcllveney remarked that, possibly, the accused might be coming south by this morning's ferry, which was delayed. Mr Day: The bail bonds arrived yesterday, and the accused should have been here too. I sSall adjourn the case until to-morrow morning, when I shall consider the question of estreating the bail.
