THE BRUCE SEAT.
* OPENING OF CAMPAIGN. Ptess Ansocialion. BRUCE, March 30. The by-election campaign was opened last night at Milton by Mr James Begg, I the Reform candidate, who dealt with J the cost of living and its causes. Ho said it was the first duty of the Government to restore the currency at the earliest possible date, and to re-establish the gold standard, to reduce the quantity of paper currency, and to bring about a state of affairs whereby they would be able to demand gold and meet their foreign exchanges in gold. He did not think that until then it would lie able to reduce the cost of living. It had been his privilege, as chairman of the Repatriation Board, to do something in the way of repatriation, and he must say it was to the credit of the New Zealand soldiers that 75 per cent, had not asked for support from anybody. The candidate said he was standing as a supporter of the Government. He believed the Massey Government to be the most likely party to deal with all the difficult questions to be faced. Mr Begg received a vote of confidence.
