REDUCED BY ADVERTISING Practical Demonstration by Manufacturer Possibly the greatest tribute ever paid to advertising is its value as a price reducer. It works this way—lf a manufacturer puts an article on the market without advertising, he has to get much bigger individual profit than the manufacturer who advertises. The reason is, that on a small turnover a larger percentage of profit is required before the producer can get a profit for himself. He gives his travellers, too, an almost superhuman task to sell his goods to the retailers or distributors when there's no demand for them. Retailers as a class are very loth now to buy any article which has not been advertised and a demand created. Unless they acted on this principle their shelves would be full of goods the value of which no one knew except themselves and the enterprising salesman who talked him into the purchase. This indiscriminate buying has sent many a retailer bankrupt. Now, with an advertised line the article has first of all to be good, else it would not pay to advertise it. It is the repeat sales from advertising which gives the manufacturer his profit, not the first sale. By advertising a demand is created from the public which gives the retailer confidence to stock the line. Then up go the manufacturer's sales leaps and bounds. lie finds that id. profit on an article on a large turnover will pay him far better than a larger profit, perhaps of 6d., on a small turnover. The article had been proved by the Federal Government Analyst, eulogised by the Prime Minister of Australia, and proclaimed the best commodity of its kind by a number of medical men. Everyone who heard of these facts of course bought the tablets. This gave the manufacturer the thought "Why, if I tell the millions of Australia!* and New Xealanders through the papers of the virtues of my Tablets, which I know myself are true, surely then I will obtain the sale necessary to establish the line on a profitable basis to myself and the public." Then he started advertising. He shouted from the housetops the virtues of his commodity. Showed how, by costly experiment, Aspirin could be made without containing Free Salicylic Acid—the part that harms the heart. It is now well known how wonderful and effective Nicholas' "ASPRO" Tablets are. How they do not affect the heart, how they relieve Headache in 10 minutes, bring sweet sleep to the sleepless, nip Influenza in the bud, and relieve all Nerve pain. To sum up the result, the advertising campaign was a stupendous success. Nicholas' "ASPRO" Tablets now have the largest sale of any proprietary line in the medical world in Australasia. The great fact that will interest the public, however, is the fact, that by advertising, such a tremendous demand was brought about that the .proprietor was able to reduce the price to the public by fully 75 per cent. The 7/6 size are now 4/6, the 2/6 size are now 1/6, and the 1/6 size are now 1/-. The remarkable part about it is that at the higher prices the manufacturer was making no profit, at the low price he is making a satisfactory one.
