Merchants are hard hit by the (tank in:-; restriction and the exchange chaos. From every cpiarter there are threats of strikes for higher wages and better conditions. The Nationalists, in the General Flection campaign, are assiduously preaching Republicanism. while the Socialists and Bolsheviks are endeavouring to stir up unrest among the natives. The mining industry lias a prosperous outlook, with gold at the present level, but it is crippled by strikes. Cost of living demonstrations arc taking place everywhere throughout the Union. The Government is being strongly urged to act before the situation incomes desperate. LONDON, February 12. Tim Irish Press is generally hostile and sarcastic in commenting on the Home Rule proposals mentioned In the King’s Speech* “Freeman's Journal” says the proposals arc n mockery to the public Intelligence, and merely another contribution to Irish anarchy. The “Independent” is confident that Ireland will not give the scheme a moment's consideration. The “Irish Times” says the Government clearly intends to rush the Bill through, though it has not yet consulted any party or interest in Ireland. DEATH OF MR J. A. CASSIDY. Mr J. A. Casidy, a well-known Christchurch barrister and solicitor, died suddenly this afternoon. He went home I*> lunch about 12.13 p.m., and died after lunch. Mr £assidy, who was in his 33rd year, had been ailing for some time, but had continued to attend to his practice, k : leaves a widow and a daughter 11 years of age.
