LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copurlght. (A. * N.Z.) LONDON, Feb. 12. The second meeting of the Council of the League of Nations was held at St. James's Palace to-day. The Rt. Hon. A. J. Balfour represented Great Britain, M. Leon Bourgeois France, M. Hymans Belgium, Signor Forraris Italy, and Mr Matsiu Japan. Spain, Greece, and Brazil were also represented. Mr Balfour welcomed the delegates on behalf of the British Government. In the course of his speech, he said he regretted that the United Slates was not represented. On the motion of Mr. Bourgeois, Mr Balfour was elected chairman. r Ufe Council then dealt privately with the agenda, which included the question of Switzerland's entry into the League, appointments covering the Commission for the Saar Basin, and the High Commissioner for Danzig, and the proposed list of names of international jurists to he invited to form a committee to prepare plans for a Court of International Justice, and the constitution of an international body to consider health problems. THE ADRIATIC PROBLEM. TROUBLE BREWING AT FIUME. (A. & N.Z.) ~ ROME, Fob. 10. The Commandant at Fiume has sent a protest to Sir Eric Drummond, General Secretary of the League of Nations, denying the right of the League to interfere in the Adriatic question. The protest added that it was now clear that the League of Nations was nothing but the representatives of the Great Powers wishing to impose an hegemony on the rest of world. The Commandant sent greetings to Ireland, India, and Egypt. Fiume telegrams state that resistance is being prepared against either a compromise or the execution of the Pact of London. All foreigners will be expelled, if necessary. GERMANY'S OBLIGATIONS. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, Feb. 10. Lord Curzon, speaking in the House of Lords, said that if Germany showed a disposition faithfully to fulfil her obligations under the Treaty, we would do our best to help her fulfil them. enforcingltie treaty. ALLIES STAY ON THE RHINE. (A. & N.Z.) PARIS, Ffb. 11. "Le Temps" states that M. Millerand has informed Germany that owing to the non-fulfilment of certain clauses of the Peace Treaty, the Allied evacuation of the Rhine provinces , has been postponed indefinitely. '
