To-day 'a river report states that the north branch of the Waimakariri and the Opihi rivers are clear, the remainder being dirty. The Christchurch Tramway Band will give a municipal concert in Sydenham Park this evening. To-morrow"evening the Lyttelton Marine Band will play in Victoria .Square. An important meeting of the committee which is making arrangements for the visit of tiie New South Wales State Orchestra to Cliristehurch will be held at the City Council Chambers this evening. At a meeting of the Tnvcrcargill branch of,the Railway Officers' Institute a resolution was adopted protesting against the injustice to members of the service shown in the D."3 list, and asking the executive to make urgent representations to the Minister of Railways to withdraw the list for revision in terms of the agreement with the executive in April, 1919.. The resolution urged that .'ill members should lie classified in accordance with this agreement, and expressed confidence in the executive. The Dominion Building Trades' Federation, which has been set up under the constitution of the Alliance of Labour, and -which covers all unions engaged in the building industry, has now a district council in Canterbury. District councils have now been formed in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury, while steps are being taken towards the formation of another in Dunedin. Two representatives each of the following unions form the Canterbury District Council: —Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, Christchurch Painters' Union, General Labourers '. Bricklayers', Stonemasons', United Furniture Trades, numbers', Timber and Coalyard Employees', Plasterers'. Brick and Tile Makers'. Office-bearers have been elected as follow:—President, Mr 11. Hunter; vicepresidents, Messrs IT. Worrall and O. T. Owen; secretary-treasurer, Mr F. A. Moodr.

j At a meeting of the Christchurch Garrison Sports Committee last evening it was decided that a garrison sports 'meeting should be held about the end !of February. The carnival will be conducted on much the same lines as the , very successful one held at the Metropolitan Show Grounds on March 1, 1919. The athletic events will be held under [the rules of the New Zealand Amateur i Athletic Association, and will lie open only to amateurs. An executive committee, consisting of Major G. L. Steven'son, Major ('. V. Looming, M.C., Captain A. il. Carrington. N.Z.S.C, Captain 1). M. Robertson and Captain 11. G. Livingstone, and Messrs A. L. Chappell and C. S. Thomas (the last-named two gentleman representing the Canterbury centre of the N.Z.A.A.A.) was appointed last evening to control the carnival. The executive is to submit, a draft programme to a meeting of the general committee, to which units of the garrison are to send representatives, in a fortnight's time. A rumour denied.
