The ferry steamer Maori, despite the fact that she had a strong southerly wind to contend against the greater part of the journey from Wellington, reached port at 9.30 a.m., a considerable improvement on recent performances. The New Zealand Shipping Company's ltner Remuera is to leave Lyttelton to-day for Wellington, whence she sails on Wednesday for London, via Panama. The same company's liner Kaikoura, from London, via Montreal, Auckland and WelUngton, arrived here this morning. The vessel is in command of Captain M. M. Downtown. After, discharging about 1000 tons of cargo she will go to Australia to load for Home.

The Kaiwarra, at present engaged at the discharge of the portion of her cargo of salt and superphosphates from Adelaide, consigned to this port, is expected to be ready for sailing about Wednesday next for Wellington, where the balance of her freight will be landed. The Australford, it Is aqticipated, will finish the discharge of the Lyttelton part of her general cargo on Monday, in which case she will leave that evening for Wellington, and from there will proceed to Auckland to finish discharge.

The Koromiko, which arrived here yesterday morning, with a cargo of Newcastle coal, will take In a full load of produce for Auckland, for which port she will be dispatched towards the end of next week. The Kittawa, after finishing discharge of her Westport coal, has been timed to sail on Monday night on a return trip to the West Coast. It has not yet been decided where her next load will be put out. The Kahika was delayed at Greymouth earlier in the week, owing to the heavy swell at the bar. She was expected to get away late last night for Lyttelton, with a full cargo of coal and timber. The Karamu, laden with coal and timber, fs to leave Greymouth this evening for Lyttelton. The Kamona left Oamaru on Thursday morning for Auckland, and, after discharge, will go into dock for overhaul. The Waihora is expected to leave San Francisco at the end of the week with case oil for Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney. The Corinna, from New Plymouth, is due back at Wellington to-morrow with another cargo of cheese. The Breeze, laden with a locomotive and a number of railway trucks, is to leave here this evening for Wellington, and will return to Lyttelton on Tuesday with transhipments. The Calm, from Wanganui, via Wellington, with general cargo, is due at this port to-morrow, and will leave the following evening for Dunedin and Timaru. The Wootton arrived at Lyttelton early this morning from Wellington, with a full load of general commodities. She has been set down for sailing on Monday on the return trip. The Wakatu, from Wellington, via Kaikoura. reached here last night, laden with mixed merchandise. She is to leave on Monday evening for the ports mentioned. The auxiliary schooner Houto was placed on the slip here this morning for cleaning and painting. When this work has been finished she will load general cargo for Kalpara. The following amendment to the shipping regulations under the War Regulations Act has been made by Order-in-Council: —The term "New Zealand ship," as used in clauses 6, 7 and 8 of the said Shipping Regulations, 1917, shall extend and apply not only to any British ship having its port of registry In New Zealand, but also to any British ship owned by or chartered by any company incorporated in New Zealand, or any company, firm or person the headquarters of whose business is in New Zealand. PERSONAL. Mr A. B. Sizar and Mr F. Gosky, chief oflicers of the Maori and Moeraki respectively, have changed positions.

Mr L. J. Shukcr, fifth engineer of the Maori) is to transfer to the Monowni. Mr C. J. S. Hndfield has joined the Corinnn as mate, vice Mr H. Anderson. Mr D. McMurrau has replaced Mr W. S. Steer as third engineer or the Ngahere. Mr A. Undcrhill has joined the John as second engineer. Mr H. Faulkner, third engineer of the vessel, has signed oft". Mr H. Donald, late second olllcer of the Tarawera; has passed the Board of Trade examination, and obtained his foreign-going master's certificate. Mr F. J. Clare, late third officer of the Makura, has obtained his chief officer's certificate.

Mr A. Landel has succeeded Mr L. Giinn as assistant purser of the Maori, and the latter has transferred to the Moeraki.

OVERSEAS VESSELS. . The Commonwealth Government steamer Parattah, now discharging part of her 4500 cases of oil from San Francisco at Auckland, had not previously visited- the New Zealand port for two and a-half years. Wellington and Brisbane are her other ports «f discharge. The Union Company are the New Zealand agents. Captain W. R. Chaplin, who is In charge, has with him the following officers:—Chief, Mr J. B. Quintan; second, Mr J. B. Thomas; third, Mr J. B. Keane.;. chief engineer, Mr M. Lawson; second, Mr D.' Urquhart; third, Mr M. Askew; chief steward, Mr F. G. Cairns; purser, Mr E. Withers; wireless operator, Mr T. B. Trestlcr.

The Nuddea, to the agency of the New Zealand and African Company, after completing her loading at Wellington, sailed yesterday for Boston and New York. A unit of the British-India Steam Navigation Company, the vessel was built this year by Barclay, Curie and Co., Ltd., at Glasgow. Her cargo-working appliances are all of an up-to-date type. She is a twin-screw vessel, of 8000 tons gross, has six holds, and a cruiser stern. Her dimensions are:—Length, 449.5 ft; breadth, 58.2 ft; and depth, 37.1 ft. Captain H. J. Brooks is in command. The Riverina, from Sydney, is due at Wellington on Monday, and will leave on the return trip on December 4. Th» Tahiti, according to latest arrangement, will load at Wellington for Vancouver and is to sail early next week. ilie Shaw, bavill liner lonic is due at Wellington on Thursday next to complete loading. She is to sail for London on December 7. . The Ayrshire, from Tokomaru Bay, is due at Wellington to-morrow to complete loading for Home. She is to sail next Wednesday for Liverpool, via Panama. x The R.M.S. Moana is now timed to sail from Wellington on December 13 for San Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete. The Port Lyttelton, which left Auckland on September 26, arrived at London on November 22. The Newmark, being delayed by rain at Wellington, postponed her departure for Newcastle until to-day. The Waimate, which left Bluff on September 13 for London, arrived at Suez on November 14. ... . . . , The Port Denison had been fixed to leave Melbourne on December 11 for Wellington to load meat, butter and cheese, but it has recently been announced that she will load entirely in Australia, under orders from the Imperial Government. The Pakeha arrived at Hobart on Wednesday from Home, via Frcmantle, Adelaide and Melbourne. After calling at Newcastle she will proceed to Wellington. The New Zealand Shipping Company s new steamer Otakl, which was launched on October 22. will probably load in New \ork next month.
