GRADING OF TEACHERS

Tyndall moved: —"Thai the teachers' grading scheme imposes ;i handicap on initiative and originality, and is therefore inimical to the progress of educational ideals and methods.'' lie said that the present system was leading in the direction of barbed-wire bureaucracy, and. was likely to lead to intellectual slavery. The motion found little support, though members agreed that there were defects, one of which was that inspectors were .so rushed that they had not the time to obtain daia on which teachers should be graded. Only two members voted for the motion.
