One effect of the visit of the Epidemic Commission to v the quarantine station at Somes Island, says a Press Association message, is to draw attention to the total inadequacy of the buildings for the purpose. They are 40 years old, worm-eaten and deficient in every convenience, and cannot accommodate any large number. It is estimated that a heavy sum will be required to install the buildings with appliances suitable for accommodating a large number of persons. An accident, happily without any serious results, occurred at the Rangiora railway station at about 4.45 p.m. ou Saturday. The Christchurch-Waikari train was standing at the platform, and some carriages were being taken up the line to enable them to be shunted on to a siding, when by some means they got out of control and rau back ou to the standing train. They had a fair way on, and the force with wliich they struck the train forced it back about half a chain. The worst experience the passengers had was a considerable shock. One of the empty carriages was derailed, blocking traffic for. some time. The carriages hit end on received considerable damage to their buffers and other iron work.
