Members of the Canterbury Automobile Association are urgently requested to be in attendance at the station to-morrow morning on the arrival of the ferry train, to convey the largo number of Main Body men, who are expected, to their homes. The secretary of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has received the following telegram from the secretary of the Marino Department: —“Regulation made allowing holder of a trout license to fish for salmon and trout in any river up to April 30 next inclusive, and restricting ench person to six salmon per day, ’ ’ The “Sundowners” Musical Party gave a very enjoyable programme (o ai large and enthusiastic audience at the | Choral Hall on Thursday night. The concert was organised by the Amalgamated Carpenters’ and Joiners’Union and the Orange Lodge ns a benefit for Mr Hart, who met with a railway accident a short time ago. It is probable that Dr 11. T. 3. Thacker, M.P., will be a candidate for the mayoralty of Christchurch next month. Dr Thacker has not yet arrived at a decision on the representations which have been made to him on the subject. A meeting of the committee of the recently-formed Progress League was held in the New Brighton Council Chambers last evening. Capt. A. W. It was decided to hold a general meeting on the second Saturday in each month. Regarding the dispute between the Canterbury Repatriation Board and the Government concerning the right of flic Board to appoint an adequate stall, Mr C. 11. Hewlett, a member of the board, who returned from Wellington this morning, states that he was informed by Mr A. F. Drayton, who had been attending the conference of chairmen of repatriation boards, that the Government had given the board a free hand to appoint its staff. The housing problem has been acutely brought home by the expected arrival during the next few days of a hundred or so soldiers with their wives. The exact number is not known, but it is obvious that with an absolute famine in houses to let, few will be able to immediately commence housekeeping. The Lands Department has received instructions to make the necessary arrangements, but how this is to be done, or possibly why this department has been selected to work the necessary miracle, its perplexed officials probably could not say. At the Inst meeting of the Arthur’s Pass Tunnel League, a statement was made that the men working in the tunnel receive only 11/- a day, a shilling of that amount being a war bonus, and it was suggested that if the wages were increased the Minister of Public Works (Sir William Fraser) probably would be able to overcome the difficulty of shortage of labour, which is hindering the progress of the work. However, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr 11. Holland), who is chairman of the league, has received a letter, in which Sir William Fraser points out that the workmen in the tunnel receive, not 11/- a day, but. 13/- for a day of six hours’ work, or 2/2 an hour.
