NEW CONVENT BUILDING.
FORMAL OPENING ON SUNDAY, j The new convent of the Sisters of' Mercy, '' St. Mary's," is to be formally { opened on Sunday afternoon. It is a ' particularly building situated ' in Colombo Street North, behind the old convent (which is to be removed) and connects with the existing chapel and schoolroom. Built in the Gothic style, the main entrance is supported by five arches with columns and capitals. The front is of Halswell bluestone with Oamaru stone facings. On the ground .floor s parlour is on each side of the entrance lobby. The ground floor in I addition contains a main corridor, | science room, commcrral room, children's dining-room, infirmary, bathjroom, community-room, kitchen, and dependent rooms and refectory. Thirtysix bedrooms are contained on the first floor, together with two large rooms, j bathrooms, etc., whilst from the upstairs corridor a staircase leads to the I flat roof. The designer was Mr J. S. I Guthrie,, and Messrs B. Moore & Son arc • the contractors.
