THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.
To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —You published yesterday a letter regarding a loan for the extension of electricity and suggesting it could be better applied to the extension of sewerage connections. You pointed out quite rightly (whilst approving of the suggestion) that it was a matter for the Drainage Board. There is no doubt the health of any community takes precedence of the electricity scheme. Have we so quickly forgotten the scourge in our midst so recently, and perhaps still hovering about? Undoubtedly it is the paramount duty of the authorities, whoever they may be, to keep what comes within their scope in such a state that there is no room for complaint and so defy any further pestilential visitations. Admittedly it is not the duty of a city or county council, but we expect them as our representatives to interest themselves in a matter so vital. If it is a matter of raising large sums of money from the people for two important objects, and the people can only afford one at a time, then the all-irnportant one should be chosen, and the other held over..—l am, HOPEFUL.
