SWIMMING.

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. CANTERBURY HAS STRONG LEAD. The successes of Canterbury last evening in the Dominion Schools' and Intermediate Championships in the Tepid Baths have now placed the province in a strong position for the securing of the War Memorial Shield. The swimming again was of an exceptional description, evidence of how the standard has advanced being afforded by the fact that in three events existing records were smashed by four competitors. So far, therefore, five records during'the meeting have been broken. . The Canterbury Centre, N.Z.A.S.A., can again be congratulated on the excellent arrangements made. The only cause for regret was that in the ease of two competitors in the 73yds Girls' Intermediate Championship, G. Shand and K. Rusted, who each did the distance in their heats in 58sec, the record may not be allowed—the previous record was 60 3-ssec —owing to trouble with one of the stop-watches. If these performances are not allowed, G. Shand's time in the final (58 l-sscc) should stand. C. E. Low (Opawa). gained a further record in the 100 yds Intermediate Championship, his time being CG 4-usec, -D. J. Murrell's record being 68 l-ssee. In the 100 yds Schoolgirls' Championship final, V. Walrond (Auckland) improved, her record time in the heat of the previous evening by 1 1-5 see, her time being 81 3-ssee. The existing record (89 3-osee) was gained by her a year ago, in Wanganui. She has therefore bettered it by Bsec. Twelve competitors during the evening came within the standard times.

For the War Memorial Shield, Can-" terbury has now 31 points, Auckland (last year's winners) lfjioints,-Welling-ton 7 points, and Wanganui 1 point. Prior to commencing the racing, a neat exhibition of diving and swimming was given by dimunitive Jack and-Mar-jorie Breward. It was announced that anonymous donors had contributed a special prize, valued at £l, to V. H. Reid, of Wanganui, who was third in the 880 yds intermediate distance on the previous evening.

Racing results are as follow: 100 YDS SCHOOLGIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP. Final. V. Walrond (Auckland 1 V. Brodie (Wellington) .. ..2 L. Agassiz (Canterbury) .. .. 3 M. Simes (Canterbury) 4 Also started: A. Colder (South Canterbury), who retired at 66 2-3 yards. Time, 81 3-ssec.

The heats were swum the previous evening. V. Walrond, of Auckland, easily outdistanced the others, leading by five yards at the first length, 15 yards at the second, and two-thirds of a length at the finish, and gaining a new record. She was the only competitor to gain a standard. Down the last length, I. Agassiz, V. Brodie, and M. Simes- raced in a line, a foot or so separating them at the finish. ~^_ 100 YDS INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

The thfce. raced practically even, down the third length. Lew just touching- down first. Reid and Anderson were three yards or;so back.. pearlng to touch down first. The final was well fought out. The scratch man, \V. Patterson, of Wellington, had a hopeless task, hut a few yards more would have scon him placed. Private watches credited lmn -with the marvellous time of 01 4-sscc. 75YDS INTERMEDIATE GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP.
