THE SOCIAL ROUND.

Miss Coblee (Feilding) is visiting Christchureh. Mrs Walter Macfarlaue returned to Kaiwara to-day. Mrs G. L. Rutherford returned to Macdonald Downs to-day. Mrs Norman Wilton has returned to "Wellington, after a visit to friends in Christchureh. Mr and Mrs F. Williams and Mrs Cording (Wellington) are amongst the guests at the Clarendon. Mrs Rattray and Miss Rattray returned to Dunedin to-day, after a couple of weeks in Christchureh. Mrs and Miss Holdsworth and Miss Chambers (Haveloek North) arrived from the north this morning, ami are staying at Warner's. To-day the Christchureh' Ladies' Swimming Club are entertaining the ■visitors at afternoon tea at Sumner, and to-night they will be the guests of the Waltham Swimming Club at a eoeial in the Trades Hall. For tomorrow's entertainment a big picnic at Diamond Harbour has been arranged. Miss Muir, Lady Superintendent of the Christchureh Hospital, has received advice that a batch of nurses from the Hospital, who sat for their final State examination recently, all passed the qualifying test. Of the 13 who went Dp for examination, 12 passed fully, two (Nurses See and Morris) receiving partial passes, which means that they must sit for examination in one subject again. Those who passed fully are Kurses A. Richards, A. McLeod, D. Hamilton. C. Baker, Bailey, Caldwell, Pougall, Holderness, Tothill, Poole and Crichton.

Yesterday Mr W. E. D. Bishop, president of the Swimming Association, took the visitors, who are here in connection with the swimming competitions, for an afternoon picnic on Cashmere Hills. A special car conveyed the guests up to the terminus, where afternoon tea was served, Mrs H. 8. Batchelor, president of the Ilinemoa Amateur Ladies' Swimming Club, acting as hostess. The visitors were charmed with the view of

Christchurch from the elevation of the hills, so much so that many expressed the intention to go up again at night, and get the benefit of a view of the city with all the lights twinkling. A number of ladies have banded

themselves together to provide refreshments for the members of the Commercial Travellers' and| Warehousemen's Association, who are assisting with the big effort to redeem the mortgage on Lancaster Park. This energetic bodywill conduct a sale of art union tickets to-morrow, and the committee of ladies will provide refreshments in the Chamber of Commerce, and otherwise assist the enterprising commercial travellers. They would welcome donations of cakes, scones, Bandwiches, etc., which should be left at the Chamber of Commerce not later than 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. It is to be hoped that the public realises the importance and necessity of helping in the gigantic " s seheme to raise £BOOO, and that each one will do his part cheerfully and generously. An engagement of much interest has l>een announced from England—that of Major Duncan Stout, D.5.0., son of Bit Robert and Lady Stout, to Miss Vida Pearce, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A. E. Pearce, of Wellington. Major Stout has been on active service ever since the outbreak of war, as he accompanied the expedition to Samoa. Returning later, he joined the staff of the No. 1 Stationary Hospital, and ■went to Egypt. He was on the Marquette when she was torpedoed, and served at Salonica, afterwards accompanying the hospital to France. Later he was appointed to a field hospital, and after Messines was transferred to England, being stationed at No. 1 N.Z. General Hospital, Brockenhurst. Miss Pearce has been doing war w r ork in England for the past three years, first as a V.A.D. at Walton-on-Thames, and later as an ambulance driver at Brockenhurst.
