BEQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE.
Pre** iuociaiion. DUNEDIN, March 5. tf The Minister of Education was approached by the Otago University Council this morning for a further grant of £2OOO to complete the Home Science building. The deputation also asked the Education Department to liquidate portion of the debenture debt of £7OOO, and invited his sympathy with the scheme for a children's department at the museum for the teaching of geography and ethnology. The Hon. ,f. A. Ha nan announced his sanction of a grant of £IOOO for the Home Science school, which he could give without consulting Cabinet. He promised that the debenture debt would be considered wiien the whole subject of the finances of university colleges was being considered. lie also expressed his sympathy with the scheme to interest children in natural objects and to stimulate their observation . powers. He said that the establishment of ;: Chair of Ethnology would be approved under certain conditions. The Minister took the opportunity of laying that from the reasonable applications made, it appeared that the increased vote for school buildings was not enough and would have to be increased beyond £IOO,OOO, where it now •tool.
