Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral au<l Countess of Liverpool were present at the parade held last night at which the challenge cups and trophies won at tho recent military carnival and sports meeting were presented. His Excellency is attending the garden party to the Lady Liverpool Fund workers at "Holly Lea," this afternoon. To-morrow night his Excellency will be present at the banquet to visiting representatives of the Druid Lodges.
Sir James Allen (Acting-Prime Minister) went up to Hanmer Springs yesterday, lie returned this morning and left for Dunedin by the express. Mr A. McKellar returned from Wellington to-day. Mr J. McCombs, M.P., left for Wellington last night. Lieutenant-Colonel J. P. D. Leahy, N.Z.M.C.,. was amongst the passengers from the north this morning. Mr Gerald Craig Beattie, M.Sc, of Gore, was appointed assistant-master at the Rangiora High School by a special meeting of the board held last night. Pear-Admiral Sir Lionel Halsey has declined a position on the Australian Naval Board offered him by the Federal Government. He will not visit Australia. Mr Robert Williamson and Mr McCartney, who have acted as advance manager and treasurer respectively for several productions sent round by J. C. Williamson, Ltd., have resigned from the employ of the proprietary.
The death is announced from the front of pneumonia of Lieutenant John Dudley, formerly Government auditor for Nelson. Lieut. Dudley went to the front in the early days of the war, and after seeing lengthy service he gained his commission. At one time he was a prominent member of the Star Boating Club, Wellington. Mr John Fitzgerald, clerk of the court at Nelson for the past five years, has been appointed district manager of the Public Trust for Marlborough. He will be stationed at Blenheim. Mr Fitzgerald has served with the Department of Justice for 22 years, and has been stationed at several places, including Lytteltfti and Ashburton. A deputation, representing a large number of residents of Rangiora, consisting of the Mayor, Mr C. I. Jennings, Cr F. B. Lane, chairman of the Finance Committee, and Messrs C. W. Bell, AV. E. Barton, & O. Josling, R. Ball and W. J. Young, waited on Mr W. McGruer this morning with a request that he should allow himself to be nominated for the mayoralty at the forthcoming municipal elections. Mr McGruer said that it would give him very great pleasure to accede to the deputation's request, but owing to business matters he would ask their indulgence until Tuesday, when he would give a final answer.
