Promises of support induced her to open a shop in High Street Chambers, and she did considerable business from the start. Having no capital, she was allowed £2O worth of goods at a time by the leading wholesale houses. She did business on credit with young women,'which resulted in book debts to the amount of £l5O being contracted. An auction sale held to get rid of the surplus stock resulted in loss. The purchase of some unsatisfactory silk goods, which were unsaleable, also caused a loss of £76. This was the immediate cause of her bankruptcy. The unsecured creditors whose accounts amounted to £lO or over were:— O. Smith (Auckland) £l5O, G. Doughty (Wellington) £73 6/11, G. A. Findlay (Christchurch) £l2 10/-, H. J. The total liabilities amounted to £492 7/2, and there were no secured creditors. The estimated value of stock-in-trade, fitvings, etc., was £462, leaving a deficiency of £3O 7/2. An inventory made by the Official Assignee placed a value of £207 7/- on the assets. The Official Assignee said that the bankrupt's lack of system in regard to keeping her books made it impossible to find out the real position. It was resolved that the Official Assignee should dispose of the assets to the best advantage.
