From Our Own Correspondent. -j Reports from Mayfield state that owing \ to the large number of shearers being down with influenza, shearing operations have been seriously delayed. Farm work generally is getting very much behind. A party motored around the Wakanui district yesterday and were successful in securing close on 40 fowls to be devoted to the use of the influenza patients. The party only met with one refusal. For many months past the question of a rise in the price of haircutting has been discussed among the barbers in Ashburton, and a decision has been arrived at, and at least one hairdresser his signified his intention of charging 1/- for an ordinary haircut. There is some comment throughout Asliburton at this decision, and the probable oufe-ne will be the institution of u coope ivc saloon at an early date. Mr (i. Meddins, Ashburton, has received word that his daughter, Stall' Nurse Gertie Meddins, has been removed from the seriously ill list. Mrs H. Wilson has been advised that her youngest son. Private .lack Wilson, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry. Prior to enlisting with the 22nd Reinforcement he was engaged on Mr G. Gerard’s station at Mesopotamia. Nurse Hilda Kidd, whose death occurred at Christchurch on Wednesday, was the daughter of Mr William Kidd, for many years engaged in blncksmitliing in Ashburton.
