NEWS IN BRIEF.

All by-law cases set down for hearing jat the Magistrate's Court to-day have I been adjourned for three weeks. The Fire Brigade received a call at 3.20 p.m. yesterday to a two-story wooden building with shop, situated at 202 Stanmore Koad, Richmond, occupied by S. Gelling, grocer. A lean-to shed was attached", and this was where the outbreak occurred, being caused by a blow-lamp, used by the painters, catching the weatherboards. Trifling damage was done to the building, but the contents of the storeroom were slightly damaged. The contents of the building were insured in the South British office for £O6O. The building is owned by Mr F. C. Candy, of Kuowles Street, St. Albans. OVERWHELMING VICTORY FOR HARLEY DAVIDSONS. | The opening of the motor-cycle racing season proved to be a field day for the Harley Davidsons. Of the three events the Harley Davidsons secured two firsts from scratch, three seconds, and one third. Mangham (Harley Davidson), was the star performer, his phenomenal riding being a feature of the meeting, winning the eight-lap open from scratch, 10-lap open from scratch, and second from scratch in ;he 15-lap open, being beaten by the narrowest margin after conceding the winner, Dawber (Indian) 90sec. The meeting of such champions as Mangham, Coleman, Crawley, Whitehead, Dawber, and others, was watched with the keenest interest. The Harley Davidson trio, Mangham, Crawley and Whitehead, carried the honours of the day. It is to be regretted that these famous machines will not be exhibited at this year's show, the American Government having commandeered the wholo output of the Harley Davidson factory for war purposes. The agents, Messrs Jones Bros., Ltd., Clock Tower, are exhibiting in their window the machine ridden by Mangham in his Dannevirke success, also Kennett's machine, which secured first and fastest time in last Saturday's Beach races. .8
