Tho Christ-church Drainage Board will not meet until the third Tuesday in De- ■ comber. The meeting called for last night lapsed for want of a quorum. The Railway Department notifies that on Saturday next tho 10.45 p.m. Christ-church-Eangiora, !().:!() p.m. Christ-e.hureh-Templeton, and 11.15 p.m. Tenipleton-Ohristchurch trains will not run. Tho Government intends to forward io the High Commissioner a -weekly summary of New Zealand news to be handed to the London papers for publication. This service will be worked in conjunction with that supplied by Mr W. 11. Atack, manager of (he Press Association, to the "New Zealander," published at Home for the use of soldiers, and will supplement the news cabled by him. OVES,WHELMING VICTORY FOB HARLEY DAVIDSONS. The opening of tho motor-cycle racing season proved to be a field day for the llarley Davidsons. Of the three events tho Hurley Davidsons secured two firsts from scratch, three seconds, and one third. Maugham (Harley Davidson), was the star performer, his phenomenal riding being a feature of the meeting, winning the eight-lap open from scratch, 10-lap open from scratch, and second from scratch in die 15-lap open, being beaten by tho narrowest margin after conceding the winner, Dawbcr (Indian) OOscc. The meeting of such champions as Manghnm, Coleman, Crawley, Whitehead, Dawbcr, and others, was watched with the keenest interest. Tho llarley Davidson trio, Maugham, Crawley and ' Whitehead, carried the honours of the j day. It is to be regretted that these j famous machines will not be exhibited ' at this year's show, tho American! Government having commandeered the whole output of the llarley Davidson factory for war purposes. The agents, Messrs .Tones Bros., Ltd., Clock Tower, arc exhibiting in their window the machiiio ridden by Mangham in his Danuevirke success, also Kennett's machine, which secured first and fastest time in last Saturday's Beach races. .8
Tho Canterbury Education Board is now in communication with all the education boards of the Dominion in regard I lo the matter of the period for which the schools shall remain closed, having regard to the approaching summer vacation and the fact that the schools are at present closed indefinitely on account of the intluenza epidemic. One case of attempted suicide was dealt with by the Magistrate, Mr T. A. B. Bailey, at the Court this morn ing. Christopher Monro appeared on remand for attempting on November !i to cut his throat. Accused had again iattempted while in hospital to take his life, but his action could not be set down to drink, but to domestic troubles. Prisoner was convicted and ordered to [report once a week for three months to |the Probation Officer.
