Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We captured prisoners and machinefiims and inflicted many casualties n raids and local encounters at Aveluy Wood, Hebuterne, Boyelles, and both banks of the Scarpc. We repulsed with loss several attempts to recapture the ground north-westward of Merris.

THE SUBMARINE WAR.
WEST ATLANTIC RAIDS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Rec. June 22, 2.r>) WASHINGTON, June 20. A coast-wise steamer reports encountering a U-boat off South Carolina. She escaped owing to her superior speed, sending out calls by wireless. A second U-boat was seen 180 miles south of Sandyhook, and pursued a steamer, which also escaped. BRITISH VESSEL SUNK. Australian and A'./,. Cable Association. (Rcc. June 22, 2.5) RIO JANEIRO, June 20. The British ship Holbein landed 42 survivors of the British steamer Cairnross, which was sunk by a Üboat in the Azores, after an ail-night light. There were no casualties.
IRISH PROPAGANDA.
SEDITION IN AMERICA. Australian and X.Z. Call,* Ax.wciation. (Rcc. June 22, 2.5) NEW YORK, June 20. The Ancient Order of Hibernians has demanded that the United Slates Government stamp out i reason. Sedition is preached openly under the guise of Irish patriotism. The Hibernians are fully in accord with the United States prosecution of the war.
