ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY.) v

The fifteenth annual meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was helil last'evening, the Rev. Dr "Ervvi:i (vice-president) being in the chair, an J there being an attendance of about !!0 members. The annual report announced a successful year. The rose show had been hehl as in the previous year, in the Domain, in aid of patriotic funds. As the result of heat and ilust the (dooms were not seen at their best. T.he committee considered that a rose show in a tent was not satisfactory, and that in future il should be held in a hall. Although the public attendances at the show had no: been so large as might have been desired, if was pleasing to note a number of now exhibitors. The number of trophies for competition at the shows had boon further increased, donors being Messrs Ashby, Bergh, and Co., Mason, Struthcrs, and Co., E. Recce and Co., and .Mr Beumelburg. An amateur cottage garden competition held during the year had boon most successful,- and the thanks of the committee were duo to all who had helped. The primary school children had boon encouraged to take an interest in horticulture, nnd the pupils oil Standards V and VI invited to the soring and chrysanthemum shows. Over 1000 had attended each. Thanhs wore extended to all donors of special prizes. During the year 42 now members had been admitted! Eight had resigned, an i Is) been struck off for arrears, c!( : . Death had removed five, and letters of condolence had been sent to the relatives.

The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a profit of £9 G/S on the year's working, and the balance-sheet a credit balance of £lll 4/S).

The report and balance-sheet wen adopted, the committee being congratu lated on the profit shown.

It was resolved that the society be incorporated to secure its position in matters of litigation. The Rev. H. IT. Mathias (New Brighton) wrote suggesting that no further money prizes be given during the war, and that all profits ,be handed over +o the Red Cross Fund.—lt was decided to take no action.

The Lady Liverpool Fund (Christ church branch) wrote soliciting aid. — The letter was referred to the commit tee, with power to act.

If. was decided that lectures and exhibitions, be held under the auspices of the society, the dates to be fixed by the committee.

Poulsen it. was resolved that: "The society may at th" annual general meeting honour any person "who has rendered signal, service to the society -by electing such person to bo a life member. Life members shall bo entitled to all the privileges of a.; nual members." Six new members were elected.
