RUGBY FOOTBALL.
THE PROFESSIONAL LAWS. ENGLISH UNION'S ATTITUDE. Since the annual report of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union was circulated, a few days ago, the council of that body has received from the English Kugby Union a letter in connection with the matters dealt with at a special meeting of delegates to the N.Z.R.U., held in Wellington in October last. That meeting of delegates passed certain resolutions in connection with the laws as to> professionalism. * . The letter, dated at Kensington Bar racks on Manh 7 last, from the secretary to the English Rugby Union, runs as follows:
"I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of December 21 last enclosing copy of resolution passed by the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union at a special meeting. So many of my committee are abroad on active service or engaged in important war work that it is impossible to hold a representative committee meeting. A small sub-committee has met to consider your resolution, and they feel that the questions involved are of such a character that thev can oulv be dealt with
at a full committee meeting. They further feel that the present time is inopportune for dealing with such important alterations, and suggest that tha resolutions be resubmitted when the existing supreme crisis is over. Also to enable my committee to form some idea of the 'conditions obtaining in New Zealand' upon which your resolution ; s based they will be greatly obliged if these are explained to them."
