NEWS IN BRIEF.

The Minister of Defence has received advice that the 35th Reinforcement has arrived safely at its destination. There is still no trace of Robert Dickson Warden, alias Robert Lawrence, who escaped from the Paparua Prison on Monday morning.

We are requested to state that none of the horses being disposed of by art union in the interests of the patriot:-' and other funds have any engagements. The week-end sale of home-made food supplies at the Red Cross Sales Depot this -week will be in charge of Mrs Edgar Stead, who will have the usual supply of cooked foods, etc. Always a popular conclusion to the annual " festival of the Christchaivh Competitions and Literary Society are the demonstration concerts, and last evening's function proved no exception to the rule, the King's Theatre being packed by a large audience, when a splendid programme was rendered by the prize-winners at the recent competitions.

He had no counsel, and he required none. He had, indeed, the most intimate acquaintance with legal terms and legal procedure. His address to the jury proved it. "On this 'ere same said charge, gentlemen of the jury," he began grandiloquently, "on this 'ere same said charge . . . think wot you like, blokes, 1 never done it. That's straight." A Paddy's Market is being held on Norwich Quay, at Lyttelton, to-day, and fair attendances have, done good business in the disposal of produce, flowers, etc. The market was arranged by the Seamen's Institute for the purpose of financially assisting its operations amongst the men of the mercantile marine.

As a witness was entering the box in the Magistrate's Court this morning he stumbled slightly, and fell against the rails of the box. The case before the Court was one involving the question of a certain person's state of sobriety. "Now, if you do that," said Mr YV. J. Hunter, who was appearing for the defendant, "the senior-sergeant will say you are drunk. You never know what these police officers will say." "You do not," said the witness, with grim emphasis. Wearied apparently by the weight of its name, the New Zealand Agricultural and Pastoral Labourers' Industrial Union of W T orkers (sic) is seeking affiliation with the Union of Australian Workers. It seems, in the circumstances, a legitimate application for relief. But there is a second argument also for amalgamation if you continue basely sceptical of the first. There are the sleepless farmers and squatters. When the N.Z.A. & P.L.I.U. of W. has become harmless A.W.U., employers will again find it possible to rest. Their gentle secretary says-so. The A.W.U's love nothing so much as peace. They would never, never strike—even if circumstances compelled them to refuse to work. A house is being painted in Durham Street North, and one Christchurch citizen will have occasion to remember the fact for a long time. The gentleman in question is a carrier by occupation, and his part in the affair was to deliver various paints and other necessaries of the painting trade at the house .being renovated. Amongst the goods to .be discharged was a large drum of white paint, over the top of which, and hanging down its sides, was a piece of sacking, thus concealing what was within. How it happened the scribe knows not. but suddenly loud cries rent the air, and, turning, he beheld a dripping, stuttering, white-robed figure, that shrieked curses on paints, painters, and everything connected with paint, but the good carrier was nowhere to be seen. Investigation, however, discovered him in the pure white shrieking figure, He had apparently attempted to carry the drum on his head, but disaster had resulted. Latest Model 5 h.p.
