TURF TOPICS.
I The American-bred Mohawk will make his first effort in Mr II Friedlauder's interest in the Oamaru Cup, and with only 8.4 to cany he should be capable of cutting out a very solid mile. Though Kilbrogau and Spangle both failed at Ashburtou, they are likely to show improved form at Oamaru, and Tiemcna has been galloping so well of late as to suggest her having fair prospects. Somme Kiss's victory h> the Newmarket Stakes would probably be veil anticipated, for only a fortnight ago the son of Sunstar and Stolen Kiss acted as runner-up to Gainsborough in the Two Thousand Guineas.
Sedd el Bahr wijl make his debut as a juniper in the Empire Hurdles at Oam aru next week. He has done a fair amount of schooling at Wingatui, and gives a good deal of promise at th;business.
Battle Eve will not be a competitor ! a-: the North. Otago meeting next week. iHe has quite recovered from the mishap that prevented him racing at Ash-bin-ton, but backward. The acceptances received for the North Otago Jockey Clubjg winter meeting are of a disappointing nature. Only five stand their ground in the Oamara Cup out of an original entry of 15, while there has also been an unaccountable shrinkage in the Railway Handicap and Stewards ' Handicap. A cable message from Sydney mentions that the stewards of the Newcastle Jockey Club have disqualified <:or 12 months the owner, jockey (P. Maker) and horse (Admiral Beatty) in connection with the running of the horse at the club's recent meeting.
Spangle has been galloping well since her failure in the Ashburton Cup, and is likely to give a much improved display in the big event at Oamaru next week.
Two recent additions to A. Fleming's team are Jolly Girl and Gfadeye, both of whom will be seen out at the Canterbury Park meeting next month. The Oakhampton trainer, J. Bryce, has a very strong team of horses in work for the Canterbury Park meeting. Amongst them are Cathedral Chimes, Inwood, Zara, Drum Major, Beewocd, Nutwood Junior, General Wilkes, Beekom, Hectorata, Molly McKiuncv, Mountain Rose, and 'Cello Sydney Wilkes.
Admiral Wood is being prepared for the Canterbury Park meeting by F. Holmes. The Derby winner looks in robust health, but has hardly done a solid enough preparation to see out two miles.
'Cello Sydney Wilkes has rejoined J. Bryce's team at Oakhampton, while Inwood and Hectorata are other recent additions to the same stable.
In anticipation of a big collection of horses from all parts of the Dominion at its meeting next month, the Canterbury Park Trotting Club has had .".0 additional stalls erected at its course.
Beeswing, who ran third in the Amateur Handicap at the recent Fortuity L'ark meeting, appears amongst the entrants for the corresponding race at the Canterbury Park meeting. As she has a record of .'linin 49aec she is ineligible for the Canterbury Park race. The Ellerslie-trained Fionnuala has arrived at Wanganui, ami is one of the fancied candidates for the Century Hurdles. The Achilles filly Momac Ins been leased by Mr 11. Card,- a patron of .!. Ayres's stable, and will in future he trained by P. Hazelman at Tauherenikau.
Seadown accompanied Coalition to Wanganui. Seadown has been engaged in a flat race on the first day at Auckland, and a hack hurdle race on the second day. He will be schooled in company at Wanganui and Ellerslie, bat may not be raced over hurdles until the Hawke 's Bay meeting. After the Manawatu meeting, where he ran third on the opening day, the Coronet gelding Astor was disposed of cheaply for lQOgs. He made his first appearance in-his new owner's colours in the Flying Handicap at the Marlborough meeting on Tuesday, and carried top weight to victory. On the second day of the meeting he did even better by appropriating the President's Handicap with 9.4 in the saddle. As a result of Marlborough racing. Astor has incurred-lOlh penalty in the Borough Handicap at Wanganui, bringing his .weight up to B.U. Henry Clay will have to put up 71b extra in Connolly Handicap for the Marlborough Cup win. Rawakore will not.be required to put up any extra weight in the Borough Handicap.- . • - TEMPLAR.
