PROTEST BY CITY FIRMS. m ** Among the correspondence read nl tho meeting of the Fire Board lasi evening was a petition signed by representatives of 15 firms protesting against the board's charges for connecting theif tire alarm installations with the central station, while there was also a letter from tiie New Zealand Express Company complaining about the charge made by the board for a false alarm given on the company’s premises. The secretary stated that the board made a charge of £2 2/- for connecting private alarms with tlie station, wh'ld a charge of £1 1/- was made for false alarms given by any private alarm installation. Mr Holland: They call that exorbitant ? Mr Busbridge: I call it paltry, sir. Mr Holland: 1 think that as this is a very small meeting, we should decide to write saying that when the board was considering its new estimates at the end of the present financial year the matter would receive full consideration.
Mr Kerruish said that he knew of two iirnis with private installations who ha>l been approached and asked to siga the petition, but who had flatly refused to do so.
