MOTORING.

FORTHCOMING FIXTURES. March 16—Speed Judging Competition, Mt. Pleasant. March 3(1 and April I—Two-day Race Meet- ■ ing al Napier. j NOTES AND COMMENTS. The City Council advertiseiLon Thursday that householders, and propertyowners, were required to cut back all trees overhanging the streets, and to see that hedges at street corners which were of such a height as to obstruct the view of drivers of motor'cars and other , vehicles were lowered to' a height of i I about five feet from the footpath. This i is a move in the right direction, and it ' is probably the. result of the instructive outing which the Canterbury Automobile Association recently gave to the city councillors. It is to be hoped that the outing will bear fruit in other directions. While on the subject of dangerous corners, it is as well to state that it is understood that Mr A. E. G. Rhodes intends to give a strip of land at the corner of Rossall Street and Rhodes Street for the purpose of enabling a widening to be made. This is an exceedingly dangerous corner, and a widening will'be greatly appreciated by motorists and other users of the road. An Important Announcement. It will be remembered that some time ago the Pull Court, sitting in Christchurch, gave several judgments which in effect declared that motor registra- . tion authorities (the Timaru Borough Council in particular) had no power to require a motorist to carry a number ■ plate at both front and rear of his machine. The decisions were given after hearing the appeals of the above council against the refusal of the Magi- ! strate (Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) to uphold a by-law regarding front and rear number plates, which had been passed by the Timaru Borough Council. Now comes an Order-in-Council by his Excellency the Governor-General, gazetted last week, which says:—The registered number of a motor (other than a motor cycle) shall be fixed upon the motor in an upright position parallel with the axles both at the front in any place where it will be clearly distinguishable, and at the back in any place where it will be clearly distinguishable by day, ami illuminated at night by the rear light. The registered number of the motor shall also be fixed at the back of any vehicle drawn by the motor in any place where it will be clearly ' distinguishable, etc. In regard to ' motor cycles the order states that the registered number shall be fixed in an upright position at the front on both sides of a plate parallel with the front mudguard, and at the back on a plate placed transversely. The original Motor Regulation Act, 1008, delegates to the Governor-General the authority to amend the Act. The Red Cross Carnival. The final returns have not yet been made up in connection witli the recent Red Cross Motor Carnival, but it is expected that the net receipts will amount to about £BOO, which must be regarded as exceedingly satisfactory. Last year the amount raised was something over £2OOO, but it must be remembered that more than half of this amount was raised by means of the art union which was conducted in connection with the carnival. It will be some weeks before a definite balance-sheet can be prepared. It is unfortunate that Mr P. R. llarman, the club's former secretary, could not. be present at the carnival, but he had to return to camp. Application

was made for an extension of his leave, but the authorities did not reply to the request. CLUTCH.
